Sudderth denies U.S. 285 contract letting
State Highway Commission Chairman John Sudderth rejected reports that a contract for the last 8.2 miles of U.S. 285 between the Chaves and Eddy county line and Artesia would be awarded next week. Avalanche at Chile ski lodge kills five including two Americans
An avalanche at Portillo in the Andes struck a lodge early today killing five people. Among the dead were two U S citizens and a Canadian as the avalanche buried a camp where eight ski patrol members slept.

Baptist leaders to hear inside on Las Vegas gambling

Local Man Drowns in Japan Lake

Police investigated a bright light at 3 30 a m and found a house at 1104 S Washington engulfed in heavy fire. Believed owned by Charles Brown who was out of town, the structure and contents were destroyed as the roof collapsed leaving walls standing.
