A newly assigned colonel at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base asks a stenographer for the normal complement of the office. She replies with a risqué line about looking luscious this morning, noting her southern upbringing in Jackson, Mississippi.
Five persons were killed and at least 22 injured in a head on collision of two Erie Railroad passenger trains near Sterlington New York. One brakeman was killed and authorities reported rapid ambulance and police response with priests en route to administer last rites.
Police say Johnny Romero aged 18 is charged with leaving scene of accident and no driver license in connection with a 1946 Pontiac coach reported missing at 10 05 a m yesterday and found in the 300 block on South Main. The report cites Sambrano car owner Joe Lambrano and Police Chief Tommy Thompson.
About 500 officers and men from the 716th AAA Gun Battalion of the New Mexico National Guard started two weeks of annual training at Fort Bliss. Units come from Deming Las Cruces Silver City Lordsburg and Truth or Consequences.
Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko arrived with 75 aides to press the U.N. General Assembly for the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Lebanon and British troops from Jordan. He was to speak early in the debate opening Wednesday, as Asian neutralists seek to spur Western withdrawals and focus U.N. attention on other Middle East issues. The U.S. and Britain promise withdrawals once the U.N. can protect them, while proposals include a U.N. police force, a watchdog on propaganda, an investigative panel, and a Mideast oil funded economic plan. Khrushchev later accused the U.S. and Britain of plotting war.
Ralph Burnworth of Roswell is named chairman of the American Legion Boys State Committee. Burnworth is active in youth activities and has served as counselor at two Boys' State sessions and is District Executive Committeeman. Other committee members from the area include John Garner of Hagerman and Buster Mulcock of Artesia. The group coordinates between 100 Legion Posts statewide and the Boys State board of directors.
A House subcommittee report clears Sherman Adams of intent to influence a $40 382 penalty refund to Raglaine Worsteds Inc of Manchester New Hampshire but GOP and Democratic members interpret the findings differently. Rep Porter Hardy calls the conclusions minimal yet broadly agreeable.
Sen. John F. Kennedy urged an eight percent increase in old age Social Security benefits, opposed by a seven percent House bill. He also pressed higher lump sum death payments and aid for children with unemployed fathers, while welfare chief Flemming warned against expanding state public assistance funding.

A 13 year old escapee from the Albuquerque Detention Home Florentino Padilla of Albuquerque was recaptured on a downtown street. He and two others escaped Saturday. The other two are still at large.
Dorothy Jean Allensworth 24 of Roswell died when a car driven by Cal Gallagher collided head on with another vehicle near Corona. The week-end also saw a child run over in Hagerman and several scooter car crashes injuring youths in Roswell. Investigations were conducted by local authorities.
Hollywood reports Desilu Productions will film with rubber knuckle replicas for fight scenes in a TV Western. The LA Stamp and Stationery Co. is producing three rubber copies, alongside an order for 10 U.S. marshal badges for the production.
