Lake Arthur Fire Destroys Vehicles in Collision

An automobile and a loaded hay truck were total losses after a collision caused fire at Lake Arthur Sunday morning. The alarm came to Artesia Fire Department at 8:25 a.m. but the blaze destroyed the vehicles before firefighters arrived. An unidentified Lake Arthur man drove the car and the hay truck belonged to E. P. Taylor of Roswell. neither driver was injured. State police had no details the following day.

A head-on collision on U S 101 about 22 miles south of Santa Maria killed seven people, six from one family, and critically injured another. Repatriated POW Snap Restrictions

At Inchon Korea the replacement depot reports some repatriated American prisoners took unauthorized leaves but none were charged with AWOL. MPs found one man in a Korean house near the depot. four became sick and were hospitalized. Guards say liquor was passed over the wall at night via strings. MPs must use persuasion, avoid violence, and call an officer if needed. Officers say prisoners expressed irritation at being confined without passes.

Bus Trip Costs Rain VFW Encampment Run

The Raymond T. Osmond post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars tallied the price of sending two post buses with the drum and bugle corps to Milwaukee. Breakdowns caused delays, adding up to seven hundred dollars for a motor plus four hundred twenty five for clutches and one hundred twenty eight for towing, with a new battery unestimated. The corps, twice national champions, finished sixth after a late arrival, while the post won four of five individual prizes.

Artesia Parade and Rodeo Set for Aug 12 15

Artesia prepares for a big parade and rodeo from August 12 to 15 with a VJ Day theme. Woman Slashes Her Arm in Suspected Despondent State

Police treated Mrs. Pepper Bennett 27 of 211 S Ohio Ave for wounds on her left wrist and elbow after a reported assault at 1:49 p.m. She was taken by Bal lard’s ambulance to St Mary’s Hospital in very serious condition. Bennett has suffered prolonged ill health and despondency as her mother and family note.

Police Chief Files Dual Counts Today

Charges of negligent homicide and voluntary manslaughter were filed against Lt. Anthony J. Benarczyk 23 of the 509th ARS WAFB by Police Chief Tommy Thompson. He faces arraignment after a deadly Friday night crash near Press Hospital that killed Lt. Williams. Also injured were Lt. Leona Christy and two other officers. High speed was cited as the cause.
