Mayor Jerry N. Smith announced a Blue Ribbon Committee of civic leaders to promote a 4.25 million bond package voted September 13. The three issues include 2.75 million for storm sewers 1.25 million for street repair and 250 thousand for park improvements with 78 percent and 50 percent federal matching funds respectively.
Roswell City Council votes to accept 1.2 million dollars from the Economic Development Administration for drought relief. The package includes a 240 thousand dollar grant and a 960 thousand dollar loan at five percent interest over up to 40 years for water system improvements.
The County Commission voted to accept about three acres donated by St Marys Hospital for a public health center east of St Marys. If EDA funding comes through the county will also pursue a new maintenance building and an amphitheater with possible NM Military Institute land for the latter.
Authorities defer action against denturist Charles Hawkins who seeks direct public dealings. Assistant District Attorney Worley says pending district court hearing clarifies if Hawkins, owner of Hawkins Dental Lab, violated a court order that bars him from practicing dentistry. Hawkins faces a show cause hearing and remains under a temporary restraining order.
The Wool Bowl group targets Thanksgiving Day for the annual junior college post season clash in Wool Bowl Stadium. The date 4 p.m. kickoff was approved at a breakfast meeting with about 15 attendees including Suzi Flynt. Blanket orders totaled 250 at 3,962 with a planned $25 sale price.
