Self-styled scout tied to teen's death in Florida

Ruth Frances Dunn, 17, was found nude and stabbed on a coastal road two miles north of Boca Raton after she and 19 year old Jean Bolton disappeared with a man claiming film and radio ties. Police say Charles R. Jefferson abducted and killed Dunn after promising movie careers. Bolton, held prisoner, was released and treated. Jefferson, arrested while walking along a highway, admitted abducting the girls for ransom and killing Dunn to silence her cries.

G O P Praises Hatch Act At Albuquerque Meeting

Republican state chairman John Emmons praised the Hatch act as curbing illegal political activity. He credited J J Dempsey for leading the fight in the house while noting GOP support was crucial to passage. Emmons predicted registration totals would fall from last year due to duplications on election books. He invited former secretary of war Patrick Hurley to speak at the central committee meeting where 150 of 168 committee men were expected. Names discussed for national committeeman included Pearce C Rodey Albert Mitchell Hugh Woodward with Mitchell and Maurice Miera not seeking the post. Emmons signaled possible reelection as state chairman, pledging full-time activity if offered.

Washington reports Democrats will defend 33 Senate seats next year. Twenty four are held by Democrats, seven by Republicans, one by Farmer-Laborites, one by Progressives. 3 718 FHA Loans In New Mexico

The FHA reported New Mexicans took 120 property improvement loans in June totaling 59 173 from private lenders. Since August 1934, 3 718 families in New Mexico have obtained loans for repairs and modernization totaling 2 019 128 over five years. Repayment is in monthly installments up to three years and 32 days, with simple process emphasized.

J E Coats proprietor of The Flag Inn Hobbs was jailed on a charge of attempted wife poisoning based on a report from his slave servant alleging solicitation to administer poison. Coats has been married four times and was arrested August 3 with a preliminary hearing pending.

Weather Bureau reports week ending August 8 boosted soil moisture in New Mexico, aiding forage crops, corn, beans, and cotton. Northeast areas need more rain while totals improved stock and irrigation water. Some beans late, leaf worms in Eddy, alfalfa damage, but cattle and range conditions showing rapid improvement.

Carlsbad Gil Leads Swimmers In El Paso Meet

Dororthy Smith of Carlsbad led New Mexico entrants in the southwestern swimming meet at Memorial pool El Paso scoring first in women's diving and placing in backstroke and freestyle. Carlsbad finished fifth with 15 points while Memorial pool led with 173. Jerry Nuzum of Clovis, NM, placed fifth in 50 yard breaststroke for boys. his brother Bill did not place.

New Mexico Cotton Crop Put At 100000 Bales

LAS CRUCES N M Aug 10 The Department of Agriculture estimated New Mexico cotton production as of August 1 at 100000 bales up 4000 bales from last year Cultivated acreage July 1 was 96000 acres, well ahead of the past average The estimated yield per acre will average about 500 pounds compared with 489 in 1938 and a 10 year average of 406 Agricultural statistician Fred Daniels said.
