Monsoon guidance for yard irrigation from New Mexico expert
New Mexico State University Extension advises that monsoon rainfall is usually insufficient alone to meet irrigation needs. Soil depth and moisture matter more than rainfall amount, with lawns needing moist soil to a foot and trees 2 to 3 feet deep. Use swales, landscape design, rain capture, mulch, and appropriate plant selection to maximize rainfall benefits and reduce purchased water.
