Study links improper drug use to elderly illness and death

Washington AP reports a GAO study finds millions of elderly Americans are hospitalized or die annually from prescription drugs unsafe for age or duplicative. About 17.5 percent of 30 million Medicare non-hospitalized seniors receive risky or duplicative meds, costing about $20 billion. Rep Wyden urges better physician training, information sharing, and pharmacist coordination to reduce harm and costs. The report notes aging heightens drug sensitivity and slows elimination, making standard doses too strong for many seniors.

Senate approves 90 day grazing reform moratorium

The U S Senate approved a 90 day moratorium on grazing reforms after Interior Secretary Bruce Babbitt planned to impose them administratively if Congress did not act by August 21. Senator Pete Domenici sought to delay the deadline to revisit his改 legislation but was told Babbitt would not extend it. The moratorium, part of the 1996 Interior Appropriations Bill, was added as an amendment by Senator Craig Thomas.

Artesia to begin talks on transfer station bid

Artesia City Council agreed to start negotiations with Constructors Inc of Carlsbad the lowest bidder for the transfer station north of Artesia. Bids from Armstrong Construction Co of Roswell at 1 721 682 and Constructors at 1 559 131 exceeded estimates due to high wage rates. Smith Engineering will present a modification estimate of 237 111 to cut total costs to about 1 322 020 and the council will also consider fencing issues tied to a Bureau of Land Management offer.
