Verne Spec Stewart of Albuquerque leads the field of 64 in the qualifying round of the 21st New Mexico state golf tournament at Raton Country Club. Jim Zukic of Raton and Red Keehane of Roswell pace the early scores at 34 through the turn while Dave Connell and Shorty Hornbuckle also figure among the leaders as match play set to begin.
Raton New Mexico August 8 AP Colfax county voted for the issuance of 160000 in bonds to be used with a federal grant for a county courthouse and jail as an almost complete count of the ballots showed Tuesday.
Jeff Miller, former head of construction for the Carlsbad to Roswell railroad, recalls starting work in 1894, building the line, and moving its terminus to Amarillo in 1897. He discusses surveys, early telegraph, wool shipments, and unrealized plans to connect Corpus Christi and Roswell, plus his long career and 57 years in western railroads.

William Brode, 15, of Memphis, died after a fall while climbing Lindbergh Peak near Monarch Lake in the Rockies. Companion Robert Henderson, 15, of Omaha, escaped with injuries and described the ascent and the fatal slip as searchers scoured crevices near Camp Chief Ouray. Parents Julien and Mary Brode left Dallas by charter to reach Denver as authorities awaited more details.

Forty four adults have signed up for a goodwill trip south on Saturday with 65 band members, forming a large delegation. The group meets at the Chamber of Commerce at 7 30 AM and visits Dexter Hagerman Lake Arthur Artesia and Carlsbad with lunch in Artesia. The band will perform in each town and join the American Legion parade in Carlsbad Saturday afternoon. Thirty three cars are signed up and others may join by notifying the Chamber before noon tomorrow.
New York defeated Philadelphia 4 to 7 in the first game with Schumacher Chagnon Gabler and Mancuso contributing. The second game saw Philadelphia win 6 to 3 as Hubbell Dan ning Davis and Todd held the line. Pittsburgh beat Chicago 2 to 4 with Lucas Bush Hoyt Grace and Lee contributing on defense.

Santa Fe August 8 AP state Comptroller Juan N Vigil said applications were filed with the state engineer for 10000 acre feet of surplus waters from the Little Rio Grande and 1500 from the Rio Chiatito in Taos county with plans to build storage reservoirs. Estimated cost is 100000 dollars.
Battery A of the 158th Field Artillery, New Mexico National Guard, with 70 men and 4 officers, heads to Fort Sill Oklahoma for a national guard camp. About 5 000 to 6 000 troops from Oklahoma Colorado and Arizona attend. The unit travels via Clovis Paducah Vernon Fredrick and Lawton covering 490 miles. Return set for August 24 following a division review. Officers listed along with enlisted ranks and names.
Wiley Post and Will Rogers reached Juneau after a Seattle flight in eight hours and 15 minutes. They debated resuming their Alaska trip in Post’s red pontoon monoplane, with Post seeking salmon fishing and Rogers pressing a Nome run to lass o a reindeer. Weather forecast limits led Rogers to concede and let Post fish. Gov. John W. Troy hosted a banquet after their arrival.
Simeon Strickland of Alamogordo is named assistant in the regional office of recreation and lands while C W McKenzie becomes assistant in the regional office of operations. Strickland was assistant superintendent of Lincoln National Forest and McKenzie served as assistant superintendent of Coronado National Forest at Tucson.
Santa Fe August 8 AP No action taken on the Navajo boundary bill at the state planning board meeting yesterday. The panel deferred any action to the regular meetings on August 14.
Berlin reports the end of all Free Masonic lodges in Germany and the abolition of veteran organizations. The Voelkischer Beobachter states the last Masonic lodge in Saxony and the Dresden Great Lodge will be dissolved. Secret police dissolve the Steel Helmet formations across several regions and seize their property.
Santa Fe August 8 AP AAG Quincy D Adams says collection agencies must pay state sales tax on the full amount collected as collection costs are operating expenses. When merchants sell accounts to collections tax applies only to net proceeds, not gross value, since agencies receive a portion of the gross.
The Chamber of Commerce invited the state golf tournament to Roswell next year. It was noted there was little chance of it coming here since Clovis is scheduled for the meet next year.
A very large delegation from Roswell, possibly near 100, will attend the American Legion convention at Carlsbad Friday and Saturday. The Roswell post is entitled to eight official delegates. Lake J. Frazier of Roswell has strong support for one of New Mexico's 48 national committeeman seats.
Santa Fe announces an allotment of 180000 pounds of dried prunes to New Mexico as part of relief efforts. Howard Hanna, commodity supervisor, confirms the allocation from the relief administration.
