Congress completes action as more than 20,000 visitors to Hiroshima bow heads in silent prayer marking the 25th anniversary of the first atomic bombing. The preserved trade exhibition hall ruins and an elliptical monument anchor the site near the blast.
The Kennedy and Shriver youths, aged 18 or younger, had their marijuana possession cases continued for one year by Judge Henry L. Murphy in Barnstable County Juvenile Court. No adjudication of guilt or innocence was made, and records remain sealed. 12 juveniles appeared, with 7 narcotics cases continued, while 23 adults faced marijuana or heroin charges.
An estimated 300 protesters gathered for a candlelight walk around Ashley Pond on Hiroshima Day but rain reduced the crowd to 15 to 20 soggy demonstrators by morning. Organizers planned a march to the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory and to meet director Norris Bradbury, with plans to plant a cherry tree outside. Abbie Hoffman denied knowledge of the event.
The Interstate Commerce Commission confirmed a permanent 6 percent increase on most railroad freight rates effective immediately, with exceptions for western grain products and fresh fruits and vegetables potentially rising five percent.
The measure shifts the U S mail system to an independent, president appointed board with a postmaster general as chief, allowing bond sales up to 19 billion, union pay talks, and a rate commission. An 8 percent raise for postal workers retroactive to April 18 accompanies faster pay steps and rural subsidies into 1979 with eventual self funding. Stamp rates likely rise from 6 to 8 cents by next spring or summer.
Linda Kasabian, the state’s star witness in the Sharon Tate murder trial, testified she feels responsible for the deaths of five people at the actress’s home last August. On cross examination she said she now feels responsible for the killings after the August 10 mission directed by Charles Manson.
Draft Director Curtis W. Tarr said lottery 195 will be the highest called in the 1970 draft. He set 195 as the September ceiling and said it will stay stable for the year, keeping many with higher numbers virtually safe from induction. The year’s total calls will reach 163,500, the lowest since the Vietnam war began.
Funeral services for Mrs. J P White Jr 65 will be held Friday at 2 pm at St Andrews Episcopal Church in Roswell. She died Wednesday at the family home on Second Street east of Roswell. Burial in South Park Cemetery with pallbearers and honorary pallbearers named.
