Jeff Gordon grabbed the pole for Saturdays Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway with a record lap. The popular NASCAR champion, winner of last year’s inaugural race here, earned his eighth pole of the season and tenth of his career, boosting his series lead.

Kathrine and Shelby Skidmore and Nicole Montgomery fried an egg on Roswell sidewalks during 100 degree heat. Pickett Young, the aunt, described the egg cooking quickly while a camera was fetched. Kathrine and Shelby, ages 12 and 9 from Austin, are nieces of Frank and Pickett Young. Nicole, 9, is Leslie and Steve Montgomery’s daughter.

A Roswell woman Yolanda Gutierrez 29 died from a shotgun wound to the head at 3 16 a m at Eastern New Mexico Medical Center. Police say a skirmish involving at least two men and two women occurred inside the East Bland home prior to the shooting. Investigators found beer cans in the yard and say the killer fired after the group dispersed. No arrests have been made. Calls for information go to Roswell Police or Crime Stoppers.
