City officials move toward zoning the Old Municipal Airport as a master plan with private developers eyed for sale. Drainage problems must be solved first and six months or more are expected before any zoning action.
Egyptian President Anwar Sadat rejects further direct talks with Israel unless Prime Minister Menachem Begin commits in advance to withdraw forces from occupied Arab lands. The position draws rejection from Jerusalem as Secretary of State Cyrus Vance travels to the region.
O John Correia an investigator for the district attorney s office was named deputy police chief by Police Chief C M Teague. Correia 42 was chosen over two other applicants on the recommendation of the City Council Police Committee and City Manager Robert J Owen. Teague said Correia will assist in policy and administration and will be directly under him in charge of all operations.
Roswell aging leaders clash over how federal dollars for the elderly are allocated under a New Mexico plan. George Owen criticizes the state scheme as excluding local retirees while Lupe Mendez says funds, routed through five counties, can help all seniors though distribution favors low income areas.
The Environmental Improvement Division lifted the suspension on Denny's Restaurant at 200 N. Main St and upgraded Tastee Freez at 1211 E. Second St to an A rating. Denny's had defied the suspension yet remained open. The case now faces possible court action or license measures, with prosecutors weighing Magistrate or District Court routes.
