Four die as Texas prison siege ends
In Huntsville Texas four people including convict Fred Gomez Carrasco and two hostages were killed when gunfire ended the 10 day siege at Texas State Prison. Two inmate partners with Carrasco died. a chaplain wounded. eight hostages survived. Carrasco and associates used a shield of portable blackboard walls during the final standoff.

Clements Wins Pony Express Race At Lincoln
About 1 500 spectators lined Lincoln main street for the sixth annual Pony Express Race held with Old Lincoln Days. Ted ts, a Roswell native and Lincoln resident, crossed first with Benny Teeeee on Nogal, while J B Morris rode second. The race started in White Oaks and lasted two hours ten minutes as Clements and Morris used four horses owned by Roswell rancher R O Anderson. Clements, a Daimond A Cattle Co. employee, has run the event four years and previously placed second in 1971 and last year.
