Mexican wolf to be reintroduced to wild

Federal officials said the Mexican wolf population has boomed in captivity and will be reintroduced to the Arizona wild within two to three years. In Roswell, Dale Logan and Ward Hutchens led Rack-A-Fratz to a sudden-death victory over Ron Smith and Andrew Maloney after a three stroke lead entering the final round.

Rat Creek Fire destroys homes near Leavenworth

A blazing Rat Creek fire in the Hatchery Complex grew to nearly 13 000 acres as it forced evacuations around Leavenworth and threatened nearby towns. Crews battled heat and winds after the blaze jumped US 97 and destroyed five more homes in the Blewett Pass area. Thousands were warned to be ready to evacuate while Wenatchee and Cashmere residents watched for embers.

New Mexico prisons face record inmate crowding

New Mexico's prison system holds a record 3737 inmates with officials predicting over 4600 by 1998. Crowding has inmates in day rooms and some housed in private jails as legislators warn tougher crime penalties could worsen the squeeze. Tattoo removal program targets Albuquerque gang youths

A hospital and surgeon teamed with Presbyterian Hospital to erase gang tattoos from three youths seeking to leave gangs. Dr. Patrick Hudson used donated facilities to remove placas from arms and shoulders, part of a city initiative urged by Mayor Martin Chavez. Dozens applied as kickoff Saturday drew mayoral attendance.

Chaves County 4-H FFA Fair Schedule Overview

Chaves County 4 H and FFA Fair runs Monday August 1 with livestock events from 1 to 7 pm including wool lead luncheon at 12 30 pm goat and Heifer shows, poultry lambs hogs steers breeding and market lamb shows, book judging and swine show. Friday August 5 features dog show home ec and pet show, awards program at 8 am buyers breakfast at 9 am junior livestock sale at 1 pm and exhibit release.

Livestock Fair Opens At Chaves County Event

Chaves County 4 H and FFA Fair runs all week at Eastern New Mexico Fair grounds with 600 youths participating an uptick of 5 percent. Admission free daily with viewing best 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event began Saturday with a horse show and dance and closes Sunday. The Junior Livestock Sale, sixth annual, starts at 9 a.m. August 6.
