The administration’s multi billion dollar lending bill was declared dead for the session after a 193 to 166 House vote refusing to even consider it. Speaker Bankhead struggled to maintain order as summer visitors crowded the galleries and Rayburn announced plans to adjourn by Saturday.
Crowd violence at the Fisher body plant led to 46 hospital visits after clashes with striking workers. Entry by a non-striking employee occurred during a restricted zone as CIO UAW officials decried civil rights violations. Police enforced a riot zone while union members protested nearby.
Chicago White Sox beat Philadelphia 4-1 as Jack Knott limited the Athletics to one hit per inning until the ninth. Detroit topped the Yankees 5-2 behind Hank Greenberg's homer and strong early lead. Boston defeated Cleveland 7-5 with two Bobby Doerr homers as Grove got the win. St Louis model beat Washington 9-7.
Senator Warren Austin of Vermont praised the Republican minority and anti administration Democrats for uniting to cut Roosevelt's $2.8 billion bill to $1.615 billion. He cited solidarity and coalition in legislation as a method to counter government deviation from traditional landmarks. Austin, 61, entered the Senate eight years ago after a career in law and politics.
Santa Fe New Mexico August 1 state corporation commission with the new aeronautics board drafts state aircraft regulations. Boston report says registrar Frank A Goodwin suspended a Springfield woman's license for a week after an inspector saw her kissing her boyfriend while driving at 45 mph across a bridge. He urged oscillation only when the car is stopped.
Across four states nearly 25 000 workers faced labor strife with major clashes in Cleveland and South Barre Massachusetts troopers patrolled Barre Wool Combing Company grounds after 300 workers besieged the plant while 46 people were injured in Cleveland amid tear gas and brick-throwing. CIO officials denounced riot zone restrictions as civil rights violations as Ohio National Guard leaders monitored the scene.
The House appropriated 50000 to finance a five member inquiry into the National Labor Relations Board, with Speaker Bankhead to appoint the head and other members before adjournment. Also 15000 for the merchant marine committee audit of Alaskan fisheries and 5000 for Ways and Means tax study, amid labor act debates. The CIO official Curran said the Wagner act had brought maritime peace after a period of labor strife.
State Democratic chairman Benj D Luchini announced that Mrs Jennie Kirby state public welfare director has resigned as national Democratic committeewoman. He said the vacancy will wait for the next state central committee meeting. Kirby offered no comment and may issue a statement later on women in politics.
Washington reports the Senate approved a $1.615 billion lending measure and the House began action on the same program amid a coalition opposition. Leaders expect possible passage by tomorrow but long adjournment seems unlikely, with Wednesday as a tentative new date. The House may also tackle an $800 million housing bill afterward, facing added Treasury costs over 60 years.
In Chico California on August 1 to 4 an apparent attempt to kill deputy game warden William Price and his wife and four children by placing poison in their well was reported by district attorney J M McPherson. Four family members were ill with poisoning but none in serious condition.
White House officials said President Roosevelt would act on the Hatch clean politics bill within 24 hours and issue a statement explaining the action. They would not disclose whether the measure would be signed or vetoed. The bill bans federal employees in most roles from political activity except voting.
Santa Fe New Mexico reports that Violet Hoffman, director of registration, was informed her job had ended as the registration campaign closed. Secretary of State Jessie Gonzales announced she is no longer on the payroll, while Governor Miles was unavailable for comment at his ranch. A July 31 letter from Mrs. Gonzales dismissed Hoffman.
President Roosevelt vetoed six minor house bills including a pay for reserve officers to buy uniforms and a bronze grave marker bill. Other vetoes covered DC municipal affairs, an individual war bonus claim, and an Indian timber project. Separate NM rain disruptions delayed roads while Chavez Hatch and Sheppard backed a tightened administration lending measure in the Senate vote.
Washington August 1 The senate passed a measure authorizing numerous flood control surveys and sending the bill back to the house for amendments. A senate amendment would let the war department estimate local flood control costs for Alamogordo dam and Pecos River reservoir in New Mexico with reimbursement in view. Senator Clark explained the bill authorized no new projects and only preliminary surveys without government commitment.
Chaves county registrars report 9 714 registrations with 250 more at the county clerk. Registrars’ period ended last night and unregistered residents may still sign up at the clerk’s office up to 30 days before any election. Three Roswell districts and eight outlying precincts have not yet reported. they have ten days to submit.
Mrs. Charles C. Haslet of Arlington Virginia wife of a Washington AP editor is in extremely grave condition at Gallup hospital after a Sunday night auto accident near Giants during heavy rain. Her husband and father-in-law arrived by plane to be at her bedside. Her sister-in-law Edith of Wellington Kansas and her 14 month old nephew Charles Jr. suffered minor injuries as their car skidded off Highway 66 through a guard rail.
The Eastern New Mexico State Fair advertising committee introduces reflector bumper signs this year. A limited number will be available at the Chamber of Commerce to those who drive notably outside Roswell.
Washington reports the coming presidential race already brewing. Congress figures such as Garner McNutt and Bankhead are tied to the process while McNutt and Garner supporters mobilize. Missouri Senator Clark and Montana Senator Wheeler gain chatter with GOP rivals Taft and Vandenberg also featured.
