A. S. Hutchinson of Dexter fell into a whirlpool while fishing Sunday on the Pe cos river and was swept away. A large search failed to find him as the town mourned, leaving a wife and child. Hutchinson, 42, formerly from Galesburg, was a carpenter and well liked, a Knights of Pythias member. The community organized a river watch as speculation grew.
A severe weather system causes a cloudburst that stops all trains at Colorado Springs, tying up schedules and delaying service. Rail traffic faces widespread disruption as officials assess track conditions and reroute affected lines.
A Colorado Springs flood buried tracks under eight to ten feet of sand for nearly a mile after a cloudburst, saving a residential district from flood damage. Two thousand workers prepare for a Rio Grande rail strike at 6 p.m. August 2 over wage disputes, while telegraphers on the Great Northern strike in North Dakota and Minnesota. Jefferson City Mo Aug 1 The trial of State Senator Frank H Far ris on the charge of taking a bribe to influence his legislature vote on the Alum Bill opened today in Missouri.
Roswell National Bank sues Taylor-Moore Construction in district court, claiming 22000 in funds in the hands of the Secretary of the Treasury. The bank seeks to enjoin disposal of the money and asserts the loaned amount is due to the firm. The case lists U S Bateman as attorney for the bank.
Seven sailors were killed and eight severely injured when a submarine mine exploded during mining near Stockholm in the Sanhamme Roads. A boat carrying the victims struck the mine and was blown into the air.
New York reports a surge of arrivals from Europe as 48,000 immigrants entered in July, up from 20,000 last year. Deportations rose to over 1,000 in July, compared with 645 a year earlier, signaling increasing enforcement.
Fire swept Boggs Run in Wheeling early today destroying six houses occupied by mill workers. Property loss is about 30009 dollars. Several persons are missing and believed burned to death.

New York reports show mosquito larvae destroyed by petroleum oil and shrubbery removal in Long Island and New Jersey coast resorts. Experiments started two years ago and appear entirely successful, according to the New York Herald.

New Orleans reports detail little change in the yellow fever picture with five new cases in 24 hours, only three linked to the original infection site. Dr J H White says freight cannot spread yellow fever, while Dr LeBaron notes no gunfire in the Lumberton incident. New York says detentions on steamers show reduced suspicions and imminent passenger releases. A heavy rain occurred at Carlsbad extending to Dayton.
Buffalo report states Richard Johnson aged 62 was killed when dynamite exploded in his boat on the Niagara river near Towanda while preparing to dynamite fish. Charles Duffy sustained leg injuries, Charles Sturgis was unharmed. Johnson’s dynamite allegedly fell and struck the boat edge before exploding. Duffy will recover.
D R Britt came back this morning from Artesia where he had been employed on his mining claim.
Mrs Fannie Balmuth arrived from Lake Arthur this morning for a brief business visit, staying for discussions and meetings.
A. L. Danner arrived in town from Artesia this morning and plans to proceed to Estancia afterward.
Dr J A Farnsworth of Hagerman traveled to Roswell as a guest or visitor today, meeting local residents and sharing professional insights during a brief stay in the city.
Thomas Chapman arrived from Artesia this morning for a brief stop in Roswell, enjoying a short visit and local conversations.
J Quince Cummins arrived back this morning after a business trip to Orchard Park. He met with local partners and discussed upcoming ventures and potential collaborations.
J. W. Walters arrived from Lakewood this morning for a short business call, stopping briefly in town.
Rail crews report rapid progress rebuilding washout bridges in the Pecos river area. Trains run Roswell to the Pecos bridge with ferry across to Carlsbad, engines returning next day. Crossing expected by Thursday evening. 30 miles south of Carlsbad track clear. Delaware Bridge out.
Denver reports orderly registration of applicants for Uintah reservation homesteads. Registration started at nine and runs twelve days. Thousands line up with land to be distributed by lot. Grand Junction notes five thousand outsiders arrived. four hundred men slept in line at the Auditorium. The first registrant was William Wayback of Ouray Colorado.
The council of ministers met at Peterhof under the Emperor’s presidency to examine the project for a national assembly. The session followed a religious service.
The private car of Avery Turner vice president and general manager of the Pecos Valley and North Eastern railroad passed through Roswell on the regular train bound for Amarillo. Aboard were Turner and W D Garwood, superintendent, who had been in the washout district for several days.
A Record reporter found the secretary buried in letters at the Commercial Club this morning. He was fielding questions about Pecos Valley and Roswell, noting that July and August are usually dull for his role, yet this year he is clearly busy and earning his keep.

John Mahan, longtime resident of Hagerman, has sold his interests there and departed this morning for Gainesville Texas to establish his new home.
John Pope of Santa Ana Texas arrived in the city yesterday evening to scout a purchase. If a good opportunity presents itself he plans to locate in Roswell. He is a brother of Judge Wm H Pope.
J. A. Jones, who arrived here three days ago in a wagon, left this morning for his home in Wagner, Indian Territory.
Charles Eubanks arrived this morning from Hagerman and may be joined by J. M. Morrett who was also in Hagerman today seeking clues or contacts.
Local Roswell report shows a max of 85 and min of 65 with a mean of 75. Precipitation measures .06 inches and the wind is southwest at four miles per hour. Sky is cloudy with a forecast for partly cloudy conditions tonight and Wednesday and a chance of local thunder showers. Warmer on Wednesday.
