Mescalero fire nears control on Mescalero Apache lands

Fire crews moved to finish work as some personnel relocated from southern New Mexico to assist with the 11,500 acre Dome Fire near Los Alamos. The Chino Wells Fire on the Mescalero Apache reservation was 95 percent contained after burning 8,260 acres. A Rio Grande bosque fire south of Socorro was fully contained after 1,760 acres burned, with cause still under investigation. The Rio Grande ran dry earlier in the month to meet irrigation needs.

Clinton Denies Wrongdoing In Whitewater Testimony

President Clinton, appearing from the White House, testifed for four percent hours in a defense deposition in the Whitewater case. Dome Fire Threatens Bandelier and Los Alamos Lab

The Dome Fire roared through Bandelier National Monument and toward Los Alamos National Laboratory, covering at least 11,500 acres since Thursday. An 88 year old man, Durwood Jones, continues to work in Portales and Clovis, running a real estate loan and equipment leasing business and owning the Plains Mini Mall building. Born May 9 1907, he has held many jobs from janitor to file clerk, and still dresses in a suit and spends hours at his office each weekday.

Christians rally for youth on Capitol steps in Washington

About 250000 youths and Christians from across the country gather on the Capitol steps for a two day Washington for Jesus rally.
