Secretary of State Cyrus Vance announced his resignation to President Carter with a heavy heart. He cited the aborted Tehran hostage rescue and the helicopter failure that led to the deaths of eight U.S. servicemen, presenting a hand written note dated April 21.

Several hundred demonstrators rallied against nuclear weapons outside the Pentagon. Federal Protective Service officers in blue riot gear blocked entry as the protest continued without violence. Nearby Cobb County building collapse injured several but no fatalities reported at an office park southeast of Marietta. Amelia Bloomer invented bloomers, introduced at a Seneca Falls convention in 1848.
