Federal grand jury ends with dismissals and three true bills

Afternoon session reports three true bills and four nobilis in four cases. Postmaster Mahin case ends with bond dismissal after U S Attorney motion. A cyanide capsule odor ties to a remark by Mr Swope who worked in Tonopah and had used cyanide in mining tests.

Tear Down of Druggist's Testimony in Hyde Murder Trial

City, Mo April 28 Hugo was recalled to the stand as Hyde murder trial opened with defense questioning. Brecklein's prior testimony is seen as damaging to Dr. Hyde. Walsh probes cyanide use and other potential applications, Brecklein noting few sales. Tomas Swope Jr. recounts finding capsules tossed by Dr. Slyde and recognizing their odor as potassium. He cites seeing Dr. Hyde on December 18 near Pleasant Street in Independence.

Some New Light on the Bateman Law

The Record reports a partial test of the Bateman law at Carlsbad years ago. S. L. Ogle of this city and others sued when warrants were unpaid due to the law. The tower and supreme courts ruled for payment from the district treasury, settling about $1,606. A later attorney suggests another law may exclude school districts from the Bateman law, leaving the exact test unclear.

Entertainer Bob Smith to Perform at Armory May 7

Homer T. Wilson praises Bob Smith as a pure fountain of laughter and uplift. The event, arranged by the Ladies' Aid of the Baptist church, will be at the Armory on May 7 with ticket prices 75, 50 and 25 cents.

Chaves County Teachers Association Organized

The Chaves County Teachers Association was organized in Roswell this morning with about forty county teachers meeting at Central School at 9 o clock. Under County Superintendent C. C. Hill they formed a county association for their mutual benefit.

Roosevelts Leave Paris for Brussels in Paris Visit

The Roosevelt family ended their Paris stay on April 28 and, with Mrs. Roosevelt Hthel and Kermit, boarded the morning train to Brussels. They were given a warm send off at the station and arrived in Brussels to a cordial reception with a large crowd cheering and officials welcoming them.

Lieutenant Devlin on Trial for Desertion

Brooklyn dispatch reports Second Lieutenant James H. Devlin of the 14th Infantry placed on court martial in Brooklyn for desertion while with the national guard and regular army troops during maneuvers in Massachusetts last year. Major Andrews heads the court.

Marshall Defeats Taggart at Indiana Democratic Convention

Indianapolis April 28 Governor Marshall won the Indiana Democratic convention over Tom Taggart by a tight margin as 888 to 58 percent endorsed Marshall’s proposal to back a U.S. senator candidate. John W Kern led the first ballot with 303 votes, Taggart 228, amid chaotic scenes and protests from Taggart supporters.

Inquest Cleared of Blame in Sam B. Rose Death

U S Weather Bureau local report from Roswell New Mexico at 6:00 am on April 28 records a max temperature of 87, a min of 51 and a mean of 69 with no precipitation. Winds from GW at 4 mph. Forecast calls for fair conditions tonight and Friday. Compared with last year there were extremes of 88 and 52, with 16 year records of 93 in 1895 and 35 in 1897.
