Pentagon seeks BRAC for future base closures faces House opposition
The Pentagon again pushes for a Base Closure and Realignment Commission to trim excess capacity ahead of 2019. House Armed Services Chair Mac Thornberry rejects a new round, urging objective data over sales brochures. A parametric analysis shows 22 percent more base capacity than needed, with 5 percent reduction saving about $2 billion annually but $7 billion in six-year closure costs. Lt. Gen. Stephen Lanza supports reviewing base by base to improve readiness if done openly.
