Jordan declares martial law and imposes curfews on Amman and major towns after rioting. elder statesman Ibrahim Hashem becomes prime minister with Samir Rifai as deputy and foreign minister. The ruling cabinet is replaced and political parties are banned as the crisis deepens.
The U S 6th Fleet was ordered from French and Italian ports to eastern Mediterranean waters amid Jordan unrest. President Eisenhower and Secretary of State Dulles warned Jordan’s independence and integrity are vital to U S interests. The Forrestal led the fleet, leaving 150 crew behind in Paris.
United Nations reports mixed views on Egypt’s plan for ruling the canal. Some hope operations may still change while others say President Nasser has set final rules for its use.
Rabbi David D. Shor of Temple Albert Albuquerque spoke to NMMI cadets on Judaism's 4000 year impact, citing the Bible as a key source of civilization, law, and ethical monotheism, stressing shared humanity and American heritage. The district attorney's office withdraws from the affair involving Yma Sumac and her estranged husband after reviewing about 12 versions of a brawl between the Peruvian singer and her associates. Deputy Dist Atty Allan H McCurdy says no definite complaint will be issued as both sides present opposite accounts. The incident began when Sumac with three private detectives visited husband Moises Vivanco to recover belongings.
Albany Based report notes landlord Thomas Grogan left his Waterford area house to tenants Mr. and Mrs. Charles Taylor. The Watervliet property is valued at $10 000.
Amateur astronomer Ray Izard reports Arend-Roland, discovered last year in Belgium, is visible to the naked eye just after sunset and will be bright for several days. The comet’s tail points away from the sun toward Polaris as it travels, best viewed with field glasses.
In Miami, William H. McCormick parked legally and returned to find his car in a bus zone. Traffic ticket was issued but Assistant City Manager Ray A. Williams tore it up after McCormick complained the yellow bus zone curb had been painted after he parked.
Tom Thornton won Roswell Jaycees presidency after a tie on the first ballot at the Holiday Inn. Lee Cathey was elected first vice president, George Anderson became second vice president after three ballots, Duke McLelland secretary, Sam Angell treasurer, and Seven directors named with 113 members total. Installation set for May 4 at Walker AFB Officers Club.
In Salt Lake City a pair of children aged six and seven entered the Knudsen Builders supply warehouse and declared there was gold. While two warehouse workers were away ten minutes the boys used a crow bar for mining and damaged eleven doors one sheet of plywood and three cartons of tile.
Three local bands Roswell High South Junior High and North Junior High unite for a 7 30 p m concert in the North Junior High auditorium The program features Joan Tankersley as queen Tom Wolf soloist and a Wolf Key Syverson trumpet trio The director is J M Ayres with Woodrow Cameron guiding the junior high bands The high school band is described as the best balanced in three years and admission is free.
President Eisenhower branded labor racketeering an abomination and urged swift passage of laws mandating union health and welfare fund disclosure and full financial records. He spoke after a 90 minute meeting with Secretary of Labor Mitchell and supported Senate efforts to expose abuses by some union officers.
The Emergency Feed Grain program is extended effective April 23 and runs until May 3 1957. Applications are accepted at the A S C office 1011 S Atkinson Ave and the Farmers Home Administration office in City Hall basement. The grain supports basic herds through May 15 1957 while the hay and roughage program is not extended.
The Roswell Record for April 20 1948 reports L O Tommie Thompson Jr named city police chief by Mayor Lake J Frazier with council confirmation. He has served under four mayors including Frazier Warren Cobean Bert Ballard and Ernie Tucker, succeeding Lloyd Blakeney.
Los Angeles based report states Dan A. Kimball 62 former Secretary of the Navy and corporate executive faces a divorce suit from wife Dorothy accusing extreme cruelty. The couple separated last November after 31 years of marriage and have no children.
Sacramento report quotes State Sen. Stephen Teale noting California has 40 senators and Lt. Gov. Harold Powers who preside over meetings. He says the group averages 6 feet tall and 193 pounds, compared with the average American male at 5 feet 8 and 155 pounds.
R. W. Mitchell Jr. of Roswell has been elected president of the New Mexico Pharmaceutical Assn. Moving into the first vice president post is Charles Pineau, Las Cruces. New Board of directors include M. D. Smithson, Clayton, Robert Nash, Roswell, Harry Jernigan, Hobbs, and John Alamogordo.
In Wednesday’s Record a decimal error misstated retailer profit. Ed Kidwell said national retailers made 12 cents per dollar, but the figure should read one and two tenths cents. The slip alters perceived margins.
