The circus, one of the largest currently touring the United States, arrives early in Roswell. Tickets may be purchased at the ticket wagons one hour before each performance. The event is sponsored by the Roswell Centennial Sertoma Club.
A 6:58 AM blast in a 26 story commercial building on the East Side of Manhattan, likely natural gas, injures about 60 people including residents of nearby Envoy Towers. Fire Chief O'Hagan says several dozen treated on site and at least 59 hospitalized. three diplomatic missions nearby damaged. No confirmed deaths.
Artillery and tank fire rocked the Mt Hermon area as fighting spread along the Golan Heights front. Israel and Syria reported exchanges behind the lines with missiles and air activity as Egypt rebuffs Libyan and Syrian talks and Israel’s Labor party moves to form a new government after Meir’s resignation.
The New Mexico Supreme Court will hear Joe Hood's appeal May 1 after Eddy County District Court ruled his 207 valid signatures fell 14 short of the 221 required. Keese found 34 of 241 signatures invalid. Reese disqualified 18 unsigned voters and 9 signers who also backed another candidate. 4 signatures were voided by double signing. three signers used different names than on registration.
Gov. Bruce King, fresh from Japan and Salt Lake City, warns Western agriculture experts of beef oversupply and higher middleman prices. He notes feedlot losses around 100 dollars per head and hints at direct-to-consumer marketing. He advocates cutting petition signatures and backs a two cent gas tax hike to fund roads. He plans a Western states tour with the New Mexico Amigos.
The Roswell Independent School District Board of Education will hold a special meeting at 7:30 p.m. at the Goddard High School Little Theater. The session was moved from Roswell High School Little Theater to Goddard.
FBI official Charles Bates denies Newsweek story that agents posed as postmen or garbage men to infiltrate the SLA hideout. He says areas are being searched broadly for Patricia Hearst and her abductors, with about 25 heavily armed SLA members believed active. A roommate of Hearst cousin was involved in a separate incident and may undergo a lie detector test after claiming abduction.
Tornadoes struck from the Texas Panhandle through North and Northeast Texas injuring several people near Paris and damaging homes and farms. A barn was toppled near Alvord and a three car pileup followed a funnel cloud. Flood warnings issued as 88 counties faced alerts and rainfall exceeded 2 inches in many areas.
Mostly cloudy to partly cloudy today with breezy winds 10 to 15 mph. Highs near 80s and a low tonight around the upper 40s. Tuesday will be warmer with highs in the upper 80s.
Col Guy Perham, wing commander of the 22nd Bomb Wing Group, landed at Roswell Air Center this morning to inspect Detachment 1. He is stationed at March Air Force Base in Riverside, California, arriving at 9 a.m. aboard a KC-39 inflight refueling aircraft. Lt Col Elmer Funderburk Jr., Detachment commander, greeted him as officials anticipate a half day inspection.
