Famed clown Paul Jung aged 65 was found tied and bludgeoned to death in a hotel room near Madison Square Garden. Jung had been performing with the Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus and delighted audiences for more than three decades.
AP reports J. Martin Luther King Jr arriving in Boston faced a rebuff when a door at the William Boardman school was slammed shut after he urged integration. He declared his aim for equal quality, integrated education and invited participation in a march toward Boston Common, with 25,000 expected attendees and up to 50,000 at the rally.
Washington reports the United States will supply the South Vietnamese navy with faster patrol vessels to aid the 550 ship armed junk fleet. U.S. advisers will be added as naval survey determines needs. The plan expands air and surface surveillance off South Vietnam to curb sea inward infiltration.
The United Steelworkers union vows to strike May 1 over 18 cent an hour wage demands. After an executive board meeting director Paul Gilbert said No contract no work. The wage policy committee will meet for final strike authorization amid stalled talks with steelmakers. A walkout could idle 425 000 workers as mills prepare for shutdowns.
Roswell reached an all time April high of 98 degrees at the Municipal Airport with unofficial readings up to 105 in parts of the city. The U S Weather Bureau said light winds drove the heat and noted a prior April record of 97 degrees in 1959. Bureau officials predicted a strong chance of tying or breaking another April record.
Pyotr Demichev, 46, Soviet party secretary for ideological questions, urged unity with China at a Kremlin meeting marking Lenin’s birth anniversary. He praised improving Sino-Soviet ties on a Marxist Leninist basis, accused China of offering no concrete proposals, and defended peaceful coexistence with support for anti imperialist struggles.
Police search for Paul Bellesen a 33 year old man who served briefly as grand titan of the Idaho Ku Klux Klan after he left home in a family sports car and did not return His credentials were revoked by Imperial Wizard James Venable who said no one in the Klan would harm him and a former coworker reported seeing him at San Francisco International Airport while he claimed to be on vacation
State police sent 300 troopers into Bogalusa Louisiana to guard the expected appearance of Negro comedian Dick Gregory amid racial unrest. In Washington Italian Premier Aldo Moro said he would return home convinced that peace remains the United States top goal in liberty justice and social progress.
U S Marines clash with Viet Cong in South Viet Nam marking their first extended ground action. Navy aircraft from carriers Midway and Hancock strike six North Vietnamese boats while Vietnamese air units attack targets in North Viet Nam.
The Senate Judiciary Committee members urge swift passage of Johnson’s voting rights bill to suspend literacy tests and federally register voters in the South. Leaders anticipate a two to four week debate with passage likely, while Southern opponents discuss strategy and possible opposition to provisions they deem unconstitutional.
