Gasoline drivers may pay less at the pump than a year ago with prices down in 11 states. The national average is $3.88, off from $3.94 peak, and analysts expect further declines to just above $3.80. Lower crude costs, softer demand, and rising supplies push prices down while East Coast refineries face closures and potential reopenings.

Debate Over Farm Bill Cuts Shrinks SNAP and Direct Payments

The Congressional Budget Office projects SNAP at about 400 billion dollars over five years under the new farm bill while crop insurance and subsidy programs average 9 and 6.6 billion dollars annually. Debbye Stabenow and Frank Lucas proposed replacing direct payments with a revenue insurance plan, a framework echoed by the Obama administration. The House seeks deeper cuts totaling roughly 180 billion dollars over a decade, with 134 billion from SNAP, prompting Senate focus on a safety net for commodities and a shift to shallow loss or crop insurance schemes. Farmers favor crop insurance subsidies, while rice cotton and peanut producers prefer traditional payments tied to prices.
