Inspector partly cleared in starving horses probe
A New Mexico livestock inspector was cleared of negligence after a review found proper action in response to four dying horses at a Los Lunas auction. He was reprimanded for how he dealt with animal welfare group members, with officials noting he told them the horses should be euthanized but did not engage professionally with rescuers. The Valencia County sheriff and Livestock Board continue to investigate the auction for possible cruelty. Dennis Chavez denies wrongdoing, while officials defend the inspector’s overall conduct and return to duty after about a decade on the job.
