The ENMU R campus museum opens with displays from Roswell and historic items. A train carried 496 tons of J.J Hagerman apples to Chicago on Oct 23, 1902. The exhibit also features William Jennings Bryan 1909 speech and 1895 Commercial Club photo. The museum is sponsored by the college and Chaves County Historical Society.

Fire in Newark Could Leave 500 Homeless
A suspicious blaze swept two blocks in Newark's Central Ward late Saturday, threatening 500 or more residents with homelessness. Eight people suffered minor injuries as fire crews battled the inferno while residents aided firefighters, and no disturbances were reported despite prior racial tensions in the area. The fire could be seen from lower Manhattan and a firefighter was rescued when flames overwhelmed a ladder.

Plane With 129 Aboard Falls in Africa Crash

CWA Board summoned to capital amid nationwide telephone strike
The AFL-CIO Communications Workers of America executive board was called to Washington for a Sunday session amid a three day nationwide strike by about 200000 Bell System workers. Union President Beirne indicated a possible new three year contract discussion beyond the current wage scope. Roswell artist and author Frances Alicia Wells Hunt 67 died Friday after a lengthy illness. Born in White Oaks she lived 33 years in Lincoln County and 34 in Roswell. She contributed folklore essays to national magazines and helped with the book Yucca Land. Survived by husband Leonard Eugene Hunt two sons Leonard Jr. and Raymond four sisters. Burial in White Oaks Cemetery with Ballard Funeral Home handling arrangements.

U S Senator Clinton P Anderson outlined plans for a new brackish water test site in Roswell with an estimated cost of 2.436 million dollars. Bids will be called April 26 with openings June 3 and contract award June 27. The site will support pilot plant testing and blending equipment to simulate Midwest and Far West water conditions.

Janitor, 18 Questioned In 4 Deaths
Baltimore police held an 18 year old janitor for questioning after he led them to a park woods where four youngsters were found murdered. The victims included two brothers ages five and nine and two 10 year olds. The throats of all were slit and one was beheaded. A fifth child was missing and search teams extended to the park. No charges announced yet.
