Police captured 19 year old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev hiding in a boat in a Watertown backyard after a dramatic 24 hour manhunt across Greater Boston. His brother Tamerlan Tsarnaev was killed in a gun battle and car chase with authorities earlier. The bombing at the Boston Marathon killed three and wounded more than 180, with MIT officer injuries and explosives exchanged during the pursuit. Authorities identified two suspects as Chechens from Russia living in Cambridge.
Roswell residents packed the Convention and Civic Center for the Make Time for Kids clock auction supporting the Chaves County CASA program. Dr. Mike Taylor of Taylor Orthodontics organized the event featuring more than 200 clocks by artisans and community members, underscoring strong local support and generosity despite economic pressures.
More than 150 people filled Courtroom 1 at Chaves County District Court on Friday for the formal investiture of Judge James M. Hudson as successor to the late Judge Ralph D. Shamas. Hudson expressed gratitude for Gov. Susana Martinez’s appointment and cited Shamas as a model.
Chaplain Cecil Kimberlin and social worker Bev Bucklew explain VistaCare Hospice treats dying as a journey for patients and families. Founded in 1995 at 400 N Pennsylvania Ave, it operates in 14 states providing spiritual, physical and emotional support beyond the traditional view of hospice care.
Romo Villegas, president of the Hispano Chamber of Commerce, highlights family and community work as core values. He cites his six-year-old son Dominic as a major motivator and recalls donating gloves and hats to the homeless every Christmas. The Villegas also take their son to Ruidoso to cut a Christmas tree. Villegas was born in Las Cruces and moved to Roswell at age two, later attending El Capitan Elementary.
Villegas, a longtime athlete since Sierra Middle School and Goddard High School, remains active in sports and youth work. He coaches golf and Little League baseball, serves on boards for S.O.Y. and Mariachi, and volunteers in the HOSTS program reading to first graders at Washington Elementary every Thursday morning. He emphasizes helping children as the future.
