In Toronto four Canadian soldiers were killed and eight wounded by a U S 500 pound bomb during a training exercise. Prime Minister Jean Chretien promised an inquiry and called the deaths the cost of defending freedom as debate over involvement in Afghanistan grows.
Aboard the Auto Train from Sanford to Washington 468 people were on board when the train derailed in rural Putnam County Florida killing six and injuring dozens. Firefighters reached overturned cars as a triage center was set up. Investigators from the NTSB went to the scene while rail officials reviewed track conditions.
