In Corpus Christi a man questioned by police confessed to a crime saying I cannot tell a lie. The suspect, named George Washington, aged 76, was released after the offended party refused to press charges.
On the 75th anniversary of the Red Cross national founding about 50 members heard Glen A. Whisler praise the organization for 75 years of pioneering work. He lauded Will C. Lawrence for four decades of leadership and noted the Chaves County chapter met its quota.
New Mexico Democrats Fernandez and Dempsey divided on the House vote to override President Eisenhower's veto of the farm bill. Fernandez voted against the override, Dempsey voted for it.
Former Army Lt. Aldo L. Icardi was acquitted of perjury for allegedly denying involvement in the WWII murder of Maj. William V. Holohan. Judge Richmond B. Keech ruled the testimony could not be material to the inquiry. Icardi, 35, is a Pittsburgh real estate broker. an Italian court had convicted him in absentia.
New Mexico's Chaves County shows a high private aircraft adoption with 48 active civil planes as of January 1, 1955, a ratio of one plane per 1,060 people. The Civil Aeronautics Administration survey notes more private planes than airliners and wide use in farming, public health, and business travel.
Jess Purcell aged 80 was found dead in his garage apartment at 10142 S Pennsylvania Ave yesterday afternoon. Police say he had been dead for several days. Elks member last seen at the club several days ago prompted an inquiry. The body was on the floor and an inquest was scheduled for 11 a.m. today in Justice R Perry Bean's court.
General Ho Bart Gay, superintendent of the New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell, is scheduled to speak at a May 2 Albuquerque alumni meeting. The event brings together former students and staff from the military school.

Edward and wife said Missy appeared in their front yard Tuesday bearing dirt and signs of a long trek. Their daughter Wanda, six, had hoped for the feline reunion since they relocated.
Artesia Police Chief Frank Powell returned from Durant Oklahoma to face bribery charges filed by District Attorney Pat Hannigan. Powell pleaded innocent and posted $4000 bond. A preliminary hearing date is pending awaiting Powell’s doctors notes. Powell traveled in the back of a car due to chronic diabetes and to rest after a hospital stay.
Mack Thomas was elected by ballot to head the Roswell Optimist Club for the year starting July 1. Officers include vice presidents Stan Gallup Jack Madison and Tom Hoover treasurer Herb Openshaw and directors Stan Santheson Bob Ballew and Bill Derby. The annual past presidents ball is set for Saturday night at Knights of Pythias Hall. Gallup also announced bicycle safety week progress and the Optimist Bicycle Derby at de Bremond Stadium after a parade from South Junior High.
Dag Hammarskjold reported that Israel and Egypt agreed to an unconditional cease-fire effective at 6 p.m. on April 18. The U.N. chief said both governments instructed observance of the armistice terms and affirmed no military or paramilitary forces may cross the demarcation line. Hammarskjold met with Egyptian Premier Nasser in Cairo and Israeli Premier Ben-Gurion.
The Strategic Air Command earned the Tokyo Raiders USAF Safety Award with Lt Gen James H DoLittle presenting the trophy to SAC Commander Gen Curtis E LeMay on April 14 in Tampa Florida. Operation Lifesaver cut SAC vehicle injuries in 1955 from 10 to under six per 1000 vehicles. Walker Air Force Base contributed to the record with over 5700 vehicles registered and the base posting the lowest ground accident rate last year.
