Firemen from Station 2 returned after a five hour blaze fought along the right of way north of town near Roswell Wrecking Co. The original grass fire started at 1:25 pm yesterday and was fought by Trucks 1 and 6 from Station 2 and an East Grand Plains unit. Additional runs included a 401 E Fourth St blaze at Ideal Steam Laundry and a 1513 W Walnut St electric stove fire, with boosters used to end the fires. Police notes report teens in Hagerman bombing five cars and four houses with goose eggs, and district court handling a second DWI case.

Dr. Robert Izzard was chosen to head Chama Valley Medical Center at Parkview beginning September 1. The meeting also signals the statewide Training Union Convention opening.
Dr. Austin H. Dillon, pastor of the First Methodist Church, was chosen by the general board of education to represent the New Mexico Conference at the eleventh annual Methodist minister's seminar in Washington, D C, the last week in April. Attendees will visit Senate and House sessions and hear national and international speakers including Dr. Isaiah L. Kenen and Dr. Karl Gruber among others.
Voters in Silver City overwhelmingly backed a $250,000 school bond with a final tally of 333 to 39. The funds will be used mainly to relieve overcrowding at the local junior high school building.
Philadelphia AP Marjorie Ruben faced an odd problem when the Art Alliance Gallery committee objected to two of her paintings. The issue arose after her five year old son framed the works and contributed to the shipment, leaving the mother bewildered.
Rain fell across most of the country with light totals and mild temperatures. Forest Service officials say New Mexico and Arizona are posting greater forest moisture than last year amid a historically severe fire season threat. Last year saw over 2800 fires across tinder dry areas, while snow cover this year reduces fire risk. Lookout stations are being staffed now and most will be operational by May 1.
