Santa Fe reports indicate Governor is pressing a business and sales tax measure as SB15 passed the Senate 15 to 7 and a Democratic caucus in the House began to decide its fate. Only nine of 94 representatives reportedly favor passage, signaling a difficult path ahead with possible defeats and possible intervention by the Governor.
Paris signals to Britain that France will scrap current disarmament talks unless offered an equivalent to the Entente Cordiale military alliance. Premier Doumergue and Foreign Minister Barthou draft the memorandum asserting German rearmament shows limits of any arms convention. The note accompanies France’s push for an arms limitation conference as Hitler’s rearmament budget shocks Paris.

The State Corporation Commission issued a certificate to do business in New Mexico to the Empire Mines and Metal Company. The firm, capitalized at 1 250 000 shares at 25 cents, lists R. H. Hanna as president and a board including B. C. Hernandez N. M. Bryant W. C. Oestrich with directors from Albuquerque Encino Socorro Los Angeles and San Francisco. Also approved was the Mimbres Valley Distillery Co Inc of Deming with 50 000 no par shares. Deming incorporators are George D. Robinson F That cher and R. L. Miller.
In Albuquerque on April 18 scattered rains provided slight relief to drought areas but failed to cover enough area for broad state benefit. Albuquerque recorded 0.12 inches of rain, 0.01 inch above the year's total, marking the first substantial rainfall since November as storms extended into Arizona.
Estancia New Mexico April 18 AP Sheriff W R Meador of Torrance county testified as the only state witness in the trial of Criss and John Wilson father and son charged with fatally wounding Mrs W C Penlan at the Penlan ranch north of Encino on March 15. He related the rifle’s condition the three bullet paths and that Criss Wilson asked him to care for and return the borrowed rifle. Evidence included five unfired shells and bullets recovered from Mrs Penlan and her husband.
Four charred bodies—Harry Fowler 36 Dallas pilot Jack Poole 40 Dallas Lillian Rose 18 Dallas and Mrs Jewell Morgan divorcee—were recovered after a cabin plane made a forced landing nine miles northwest of Lewisville Texas. Witnesses saw the craft strike in a severe electrical storm and explode on impact after a local spin from Love Field.
Gov. Hockenhull has withdrawn support from tobacco tax legislation, per Sen. Wilson, amid a special session call. A 1929 tobacco tax law failed 5 to 1 on referendum. A substitute Supreme Court building bill would house the State Treasurer’s office in the same structure. House appropriations said, after passage of the sales tax, their only task is to enact liquor control. The Senate nears adjournment sine die if the House follows. Sen Thaxton blamed party issues in Colfax county over a ranking Democrat in State employe affairs, with affidavits on file. A failed amendment to strike foodstuffs from the sales tax drew caustic Senate remarks as Jul ien changed his vote from way to age on the bill.
In Grant parish near Shreveport the Bank of Montgomery was robbed at 9 30 am by an armed band, local president L D Wardlaw said the gang was led by a man resembling John Dillinger. The loot total was not determined as the robbers fled north toward Shreveport.
Soldiers of Louisiana guarded a confessed killer today as a mob of about 3000 gathered near the milon dollar Caddo Parish courthouse. Fred Lockhart 38 admitted killing Mae Giffin 16 after luring her from her widowed mother’s home. Governor Allen ordered Colonel Hollingsworth Barrett to take command to quell the siege and ease tensions at the jail.
Four airlines with canceled airmail contracts moved in the District of Columbia Supreme Court to halt Farley from enforcing cancellations. Boeing Air Transport, National Air Transport, Pacific Air Transport and Varney Air Lines seek damages yet to be quantified. The court set Farley a 20 day deadline to show cause.
The Eastern New Mexico Area Council announces the three day Camp-O-Bal starting at 1 p.m. tomorrow at Haynes Park and ending Saturday at 10 30 a.m. It is the first three day Camp-O-Bal in the region and is expected to draw one of the largest attendances with about thirty troops from across the area confirmed.
The Record reports a late afternoon rain from Vaughn to Ramon with about one inch of moisture, extending toward Roswell. Vaughn area received about a half inch on Monday, filling water holes and reviving grass, aiding sheep men as the northern country remains dry.
