Traxler wins Michigan 8th District seat in GOP hold end

Democrat J. Bob Traxler defeats Republican James Sparling Jr. in a 51.4 to 48.6 percent special election, ending 42 years of GOP control. The victory widens Democratic gains in special elections and drew comments from President Nixon and Vice President Ford about the national implications. Traxler cited moral leadership and integrity as essential in the White House. Ford said Watergate was not the main factor in Sparling's loss.

M L Norton dies former Roswell alderman

Former Roswell city councilman M L Norton 78 died at the Medical Center after a long illness. Funeral services will be held at First Baptist Church Roswell with burial in South Park Cemetery. Norton served on the city council 1932 to 1952 and was a longtime businessman and deacon. He is survived by his wife, a son, a daughter, a brother, four grandchildren and seven nieces and nephews.

West Point Appointment for NM Military Institute Senior

Riley Anderson Armstrong a NM Institute senior received a West Point appointment announced by Sen. Domenici. Armstrong son of Mr. and Mrs. B. B. Armstrong of Picacho, Domenici praised the nomination process and Armstrong's character. In a separate matter, Donald Ray Bishop of Ruidoso was found guilty of illegal drug trafficking in 12th Judicial District Court and will be sentenced April 30 while free on $5,000 bond.

Two Fires In Roswell Accidental. Two Plants Destroyed

Roswell fire chief George Daniels said two Monday blazes were accidental. At Longhorn Manufacturing Co a stapler malfunction in a fireworks rocket process caused a room fire. two workers escaped unharmed. The second fire at Roadrunner Carpet Cushion Inc and Eloium Chemical Inc destroyed both factories as roof flames spread after an adhesive hopper incident. No damage total yet.

American jumbo jets to leave Roswell air center

Balloon finds reward for local boys near state school

Two Villa Solano youths discovered a large weather balloon and instrument package near the state school. Tags identified ownership by Detachment I, AFCRL Holloman, with a $25 reward for finding and another $25 for locating the balloon. project Ashcan aims to probe the upper atmosphere. Major Burnett explained the balloon measures 87 feet across and 126 feet long, part of an Atomic Energy Commission effort, with AFCRL units worldwide. A Holloman crew retrieved the package and balloon and headed back, while locals remained excited about the discovery.
