New Mexico Attorney General Toney Anaya said his criminal division is investigating the state Highway Department with focus on the Roswell district and possible embezzlement. Officials expect findings in a couple of weeks as other districts are reviewed.
President Carter named AFL-CIO head George Meany and GE chairman Reginald Jones to lead a voluntary labor management group to curb inflation. Treasury head Blumenthal will chair government representatives. He seeks a two percent inflation cut by end of 1979 without wage or price controls.
RISD officials avoid questions about an ongoing probe while former District 2 highway commissioner Kenneth Towle notes no awareness of an investigation in the district. Towle resigned in February after a state highway probe last fall that earned the district a commendation. C D Rickman, Roswell retirement, confirms awareness of the probe but not its details.
Lowell A. Cunningham of Roswell will chair the 1977 United Way of Chaves County drive announced by Phil Owen president of the United Way board. Cunningham a Mountain Bell district manager and Roswell resident since 1974 is active in Rotary the Chamber of Development and Commerce and the YMCA.
Wugalter and Dr. Al Clemmons led a public hearing on the Roswell Independent School District 1977 78 budget of 12.9 million as enrollment declines pressuring costs. The district projects 9100 students next year versus 9201 this year with a 21 to 1 pupil teacher ratio and five new teachers mainly in special education.
