New York Abortion Bill Signed by Rockefeller

Gov. Nelson A. Rockefeller signed a bill repealing New Yorks 140 year old abortion restraints making the state the nations most liberal. The law allows abortions up to 24 weeks with a doctors consent and takes effect July 1.

NM Model Legislature For Strong Government

The YMCA's 10th annual model legislature ended with 250 high school delegates backing a strong regulatory state. Acts signed by Gov. Foster Hannett authorized pay toilets ban, state sterilization of mentally retarded parents under limits, legalizing gambling, firearm registration, DDT ban, and public liability insurance for licenses. The session also supported red light turns, first aid liability immunity, lower contract age to 18, and four-year county terms.

Roswell Fishing Derby Draws 300 Plus Youths

More than 300 youngsters joined the Chaves County Sportsmen's Club derby at Spring River Park with help from the New Mexico Game and Fish Department and the U S Fish and Wildlife Service. Prizes were awarded in a tag drawing funded by Roswell merchants, with winners including Ruby Day Adrian Sisneros Robert Barela Ricky Hernandez Tommy Stevens Pete Servantez Ricky Melton Ismael Delarosa Linda Harris Richard Chavez Frank Kapuranis Charles Thomas and Jerry Tankersley.

Avionic Lands Four Contracts Worth 100000

Avionic Enterprises Inc of Roswell won four military contracts totaling about 100000 last week. President Jim Sonner announced the company secured kit modifications for Air Force F4 aircraft, 2000 map cases for the Air Force, and components for the Army CH84 helicopter. The map case contract renews an earlier deal for 4000 cases.

Open House Plans Complete at ENMU Roswell Campus

Officials at Eastern New Mexico University Roswell Campus announced a Saturday open house detailing activities for prospective students. The schedule includes a noon to 1 pm free barbecue, 1 to 1:30 pm welcome by campus dean Dr Dale E Traylor, 1:30 to 5 pm counselor consultations, bus tours of facilities, 5 to 6 pm Dutch treat campus cafeteria dinner, and an 8 pm to midnight free dance in the Student Union Building.

Judge orders work or illness proof in PATCO sickout

U S District Judge George L Hart Jr urged PATCO to direct members to return to work or furnish medical certificates, delaying fines. The 18 day strike prompted a plan for a back to work rule and court appointed medical panels to assess claimed illness.

Robbery at GE Laundromat Ties to Thursday Night Break-In

R. A. Dennniston of GE Laundromat at 1703 SE Main St reports a break-in and theft, about 13 dollars from a vending machine and 18 dollars from dryers, occurring around 11 p.m. Thursday. Police also report two 15-year-olds arrested on Western Auto Store roof on Friday, to face attempted burglary charges in juvenile court. Willie Andazola, 20, of 1103 S Washington Ave, arrested Friday night in an assault investigation. released on 3000 dollar bond awaiting magistrate court. Deputies say the assault involved Valantina Trujillo, 17, of Auto Route West.

National SEA leader calls for broad reforms in teacher education

Charles J. Gonzales of Washington, D. C., urged 50 delegates at an SEA leadership conference at Eastern New Mexico University Roswell Campus to reform college teacher education. He proposed student voices in course selection and accreditation, removal of grading across programs, and active minority recruitment, backed by a 15 point plan. The talk marked SEA’s stand against SDS and emphasized community collaboration and practical teaching demonstrations. Delegates from New Mexico Utah Wyoming Colorado and Arizona attended.

A bipartisan group of House members has launched a drive to urge passage of a Senate voting rights bill that would extend voting rights to 18-year-olds and renew the 1965 Voting Rights Act for five more years. NMSU Air Force ROTC Queen Crowned At Campus Ball

Diane Dollahon daughter of Mr and Mrs Paul Dollahon 3514 Highland Road was crowned Air Force ROTC Queen at a ball on the New Mexico State University campus Friday night. She is a freshman elementary education major at NMSU. Five students competed for the title.
