Wilfred McCormick of Albuquerque will become District Governor of Rotary International District 552. He will speak at the Roswell conference April 21 22 after Mayor Gail Harris welcomes about 450 Rotarians and guests at the Roswell Inn.

Court rules draft card burning freedom of speech

The 1st U S Court of Appeals ruled draft card burning a demonstration of free speech and struck down the section of the Selective Service law banning it as unconstitutional. Chief Judge Bailey Aldrich upheld the conviction for not possessing the card and sent the case back for a new sentence.

Roswell Considers 6.3 Million Bond Plan for Water System

Roswell aldermen to act on Ordinance No. 872 authorizing 6.3 million dollars in revenue bonds to retire city water and sewer debt and fund initial revamp. A 3 million dollar first issue dates June 30 with the rest in fall to support water system expansion, rights purchases, and new lines and a large storage tank. Additional 3.3 million in a second issue may be offset by federal funds.

Graduation and Prom Plans for Local High Schools

Roswell High and Goddard High announce prom dates in late spring with Roswell scheduling a June 1 graduation for about 335 seniors and a May 26 baccalaureate. Goddard plans June 1 graduation for roughly 253 seniors and a May 28 baccalaureate. Junior highs set Freshman Day. districts host staff safety dinner April 28 and ninth grade awards later.

Solons Vote To Cool Off Rail Dispute

Washington Congress passed a resolution at Johnson's request extending the no strike period in the rail shop craft dispute to May 3. The Senate voted 81 to 1 and the House’s companion measure passed 396 to 8, sending the bill to the President for signature.

Roswell Teachers See $300 Base Pay Increase Goal

Roswell Education Association forms a Professional Negotiations Committee to demand at least a $300 annual base salary rise for all teachers and to push for maintaining the present student teacher ratio. The group seeks a 2.9 percent raise for 1967-68, while the district plans a larger schedule for some staff.

Reclamation Bureau engineer John Thompson said detailed pipeline cost estimates for 11 eastern New Mexico communities will be ready in 60 to 90 days. The plan links Ute Reservoir water to 11 towns as the Intercommunity Water Supply Association reduces members, aiming to lower per unit costs amid rerouting and higher allocations.

Defense Seeks Specifics in NM Governor Removal Action

In Santa Fe the New Mexico Supreme Court took under advisement motions challenging the governor's presentments against Highway Commission members John Sudderth Hugh Milton and John Q Thaxton. Defense counsel pressed for more specific charges while Gov Cargo urged consolidation. Milton's attorney opposed consolidation citing pre office incidents. The court also weighed admission of sale land briefs to Burris for about 1500 dollars as evidence.

Pfc Araujo Killed in Vietnam Funeral Details Noted

Pfc Abelar do Araujo 21 of Lake Arthur was killed in a non hostile accident in Vietnam last week. He had served 16 months and spent about 11 months in Vietnam with a U S Army engineers battalion. He was a Lake Arthur High School graduate and is survived by his parents two brothers including Carmen in the Marines and Albert Jr of Artesia, and three sisters Ana Marie Consuela and Dalia.
