Queen to Be Selected Here for Cotton Week

Roswell plans a Southeastern New Mexico Queen of Cotton and Maid of Cotton contest during National Cotton Week May 10 to 15. Local merchants and the Roswell Chamber promote a Cotton Queen with a cash trip to nationals, a May 12 crown event at Fair Park and a gala week of festivities. Beverly Pack of El Paso was last year’s Maid of Cotton. Local letters invite women’s clubs and Chambers of Commerce to enter candidates.

Man to Wed on 100th Birthday in Louisville

John L. Beard, 99, applies for a marriage license to wed on his 100th birthday next Thursday. His landlady and fiancée, Mrs. Mertie L. Welch, 69, says she has boarded him 17 years and approves the plan. Beard, a floodwall watchman with six children, will marry for the second time. Welch has five children.

Texas Loses Out in Grade School Contest

Texas lost in a grade school contest at Washington Avenue School in Roswell on Friday. The Texas drive supported by the Million Pennies campaign for Eastern New Mexico Medical Center saw 2,938 pennies against Texas and 2,507 for Texas. No statement was released from Austin.

Thief Steals Cash From Clovis Truck Driver

The Hobbs area theft involves $2,200 to $2,500 taken from a Mead bakery truck in Clovis or Lovington. Walter Blalock left money in an unlocked glove compartment and found a door ajar and the cash missing after breakfast stops. A $200 canvas bag remained untouched.

Man Shot After Warning Prober Arrested at Roswell Bowling Alley

Refugio Sanchez, about 50, died after being shot in the back by Arthur L. Rusch at 105% North Pennsylvania Avenue. Rusch claimed he fired after warning of prowling. An inquest is planned, with prior local prowling incidents noted.

J A McRea of Alamogordo was elected president of the New Mexico chapter of the National Association of Postal Supervisors during a joint annual meeting with the National Association of Postmasters in Artesia.
