Santa Fe April 11 AP big issue was money as state workers feared pay. Cash dwindles while tax income shrinks and bond risks loom. Questions arise on who gets paid and how while funds and trust accounts face deficit estimates up to a half million dollars.
In Santa Monica and Beverly Hills, residents responded to Roosevelt’s call with surprising zeal. Beer sales surged as hoarding eased, with silver dollars worn thin used to pay for early purchases. Across the country intoxication remained low, though gin emerged as a common chaser.
John H Millis faces a jury selection in Inez Kentucky accused of murdering his 67 year old mother in a cult related case. The courtroom scene shows Millis with hands in lap awaiting jurors as proceedings begin.
In Las Vegas New Mexico April 11 the new board of directors of the New Mexico State Insane Asylum ousted Dr A B Stewart of Raton as superintendent and named Dr N T Moore a former assistant to replace him. James J Connelly was kept as business manager and salaries for the superintendent manager and farm superintendent were cut to 3000 200 a month and margins. C M Graham was elected president and Mrs Margaret Martinez secretary treasurer.
In Santa Fe on April 11 AP reports jurors were chosen for the murder trial of Robert E. Burrus charged with killing Apolonio Pino, police chief. The state seeks a first degree verdict. death penalty possible. Jury selection faced wide acquaintance between men. a juror briefly wandered with spectators before deputies recaptured him.
Santa Fe report from a meeting of railroad brothers and the state federation of labor says 21 measures passed and signed, two passed and signed despite opposition, 13 supported but killed or vetoed, and seven opposed but killed. In total 28 measures were satisfactory to labor while nine sponsored by labor and six opposed by labor were killed. The groups deem the session considerate of workers though key labor bills failed.
Roosevelt's plan for TVA progress through Congress with Norris and McSwain sponsorship. Bill calls for three directors, power, flood control, forestry, and irrigation in the Tennessee valley. Authorized bonds up to 50 million and initial funds for Cove Creek dam and fertilizer production.
The Roosevelt administration seeks immediate rail industry reform with federal loans assured during stress but calls for action by the railroads to cut costs. A White House conference agreed on appointing a federal coordinator to steer reorganization, while final details await a later session. Proposals include repeal of the recapture clause and federal regulation of holding companies.
The regular monthly Boy Scout Court of Honor approved several awards. Star Scouts listed include Joseph Swaine Frank Young Jr Bobby Young Frank L. Smith Jr from troops 6 and 19 plus members from troop 36 East Grand Plains. Second Class honors went to Russel Dewall of troop 36. Silver City reports that the Nevada Consolidated Copper Company will operate its Santa Rita mine and its 2 Herley site for a 15 day period this month starting today. The move marks a temporary shutdown or reduced activity phase as the company adjusts production schedules.
Changchun dispatch says Chinese forces fled in panicked retreat from Lengkow after losing the last Jehol stronghold. Maj. Gen. Takata's units pursued remnants toward Kienchangying as Chinese left hundreds dead and seized weapons. Air scouts reported chaotic withdrawals in Taitonying and Haiyang as some units clashed with fellow Chinese.
Roswell school teachers donated 100 to the Kiwanis Milk Fund. At a weekly Kiwanis meeting, members noted the gift came from teachers who voted at a prior general meeting to donate a day’s pay for relief. J R Thomas discussed federal agricultural loans and legislation. About 99 percent of Chaves county farmers likely need to borrow to raise this year. Guy Porter attended as a guest. President Paul Wilmot presided.
The district attorney filed charges against Willie Owens and Willie Mason, both described as colored women, accusing them of stealing $80 from G T Calloway. Court aims to set trial during the current district court term with a present jury.
The aircraft that crashed on landing near Roswell Sunday night had been grounded by the Department of Commerce and its license revoked. Ca Barnett, quoted in The Record, said flying such ships risks aviation safety and stressed he spoke for the department, not himself.
Winnie Ruth Judd, set to die at dawn April 21 for the trunk murder, appeals to Arizona Supreme Court for release via writ of habeas corpus as her lawyers claim a jury deal influenced the verdict. A superior court denial of a new trial stands, with affidavits to be shown to the high court.

In district court Judge James B. McGhee heard the case of Alva Wilson of Roswell versus the American Insurance Union. Wilson seeks two thousand dollars alleging permanent and total disability. It was the sole case on the docket today.
The Roswell Merchants' Association holds its regular monthly meeting tonight at Nickson Coffee Shop with a 6 30 dinner. Speakers Dan H Wilmot T L Gardner and Floyd Childress discuss current credit conditions. All Roswell merchants and professional men are urged to attend.
Washington April 11 Gilbert M Hitchcock former Nebraska senator informed President Roosevelt he did not want consideration for federal office He had been mentioned for appointment to the federal reserve board and chose to decline the nomination in a brief message to the White House.
Colonel D C Pearson superintendent of the New Mexico Military Institute addressed the Roswell Lions Club, urging maintenance of the state public school system as vital for future welfare. Junior Brown received his Star Scout badge. Lions essay contest details and prizes were announced, with entries due April 17.
The Lions Club minstrel will be presented at the Yucca theatre tomorrow and Thursday nights. Proceeds help build a hut for the Lions Boy Scout troop. Besides the minstrel, several fine specialty numbers will be performed. The minstrel accompanies the regular screen show with no price increase.
In justice court today Mr Lassiter, first name unknown, pleaded not guilty to stealing a German Police dog owned by R B Gaines before I L Johnson. Preliminary hearing set for April 25 with a $250 bond. Victor Belos also pleaded not guilty to stealing a shotgun from Tonita Horton. preliminary hearing scheduled for April 12 and he was released on own recognizance.
Chicago April 11 AP John KE Paxter general auditor for the Santa Fe railroad died today from pneumonia at age 64.
U S District Judge Colin Neblett ruled that Congress has the power to create the Pueblo lands board and its acts are constitutional in the Pueblo of Picruis case. The suit, involving hundreds of natives and settlers, sought ejectment over about 17 000 acres in small tracts won by settlers through board decisions.
Willard Prager attended a meeting of the Masonite educational committee held in Albuquerque Sunday. He and Mrs. Prager returned to Roswell yesterday.
Members of the Scotish Rite will meet at the Masonic Temple at 7:20 PM Thursday evening for Maundy Thursday services. Attendees are required for service participation.
