The New York Stock Exchange reports April 9, 1987 activity with consolidated trading, volume of 208,131,780 shares. The index sits at 166.09, down 2.42. the S&P Composite at 292.86, down 4.40. the Dow Jones Industrial Average at 2,339.20, down 32.96. Stocks page 12.
In Prague Mikhail Gorbachev arrived to a crowd over 150000 strong boosting hopes that Czechoslovak leaders may adopt Kremlin reforms. Across the globe in Texas Texas A&M faces NCAA violations as players allegedly sold complimentary tickets per an in house report. Eddy County projects 1987 tax base rise with estimated 5.15 million increase in first quarter values.
The House passed a 1 trillion dollar budget 230 to 192 with no GOP votes. It would raise 18 billion in new taxes, curb Reagan's military buildup, and block deep cuts to domestic programs. Reagan criticized the measure while Wright touted deficit reduction, though Gramm Rudman targets unlikely to be met.
A $5 million ethanol plant complex 10 miles east of Roswell sold for just over $153,000 at auction to Ed Bergschneider of Mountain Cutter Processing Co. from Franklin Illinois. About 40 bidders from 12 states attended as Bergschneider outbid rivals over more than three hours.
Levi Strauss plant in Roswell now produces 90,000 pair of pants weekly, up from 55,000 three months earlier. Plant manager Mickey Herring notes full capacity with 565 employees, including 150 added since December. Herring cites strong demand and planning for hours to ease future staffing.
New Mexico Oil Conservation Commission reports a near two billion dollar drop in oil and gas production income for 1986. Total earnings fell to 2.5 billion from 4.4 billion in 1985 as oil output declined 3.58 percent and gas output dropped 20.84 percent. Lea County led in combined oil and gas production with 53,721,358 barrels of oil and 226,348,291 cubic feet of gas.
In Alexandria Louisiana bailiffs hunted for jurors after three trials and 91 no shows exhausted the pool. Judge Lloyd Teekell said too few showed up and ordered corraling of potential jurors. Four people, including a reporter, were summoned and three sworn.
Aunt Hattie Crowe known as Aunt Hattie celebrated her 100th birthday with more than 250 friends at the Chaves County JOY Center in Roswell. Messages from national figures including President Reagan and Senator Domenici arrived as well as local dignitaries. She has attended JOY Center activities for 13 years after moving from Smith County Texas as eyesight failed. Her nephew-in-law Albert Branch received special recognition for his devotion.
