The County Commission learned the sanitary landfill it leases to Roswell has been given a 10 day deadline to clean up its act. Dennis Johnson's three point play lifts Seattle to overtime playoff win.
The County Commission unanimously approved Leroy Carpenter brother of Sheriff Billy V. Carpenter as deputy sheriff for the Hagerman Lake Arthur area at 11989 annually. The panel cited a Rutledge ruling permitting nepotism if approved by the commission. The same day the board considered closing East Pine Lodge Road to traffic due to dust and safety concerns. James Eakin and his son Aaron criticized funding limits and road conditions, while Moorhead noted lack of state and federal funds. The commission also moved to sponsor a 50,000 agricultural research center project for an 11 county region and named Dick Waggoner planner.
Mayor L C Stiles ousts Police Committee chair Richard McEneny and moves him to Fire Committee, naming Farrell Watson to police chair. The move follows a pivotal council vote and a tense meeting over a mortgage bond issue and a pro tem election.
Jeanette King 26, journalism senior at the University of New Mexico and daughter of Sam and his wife, was stabbed to death at her southeast Albuquerque home by former boyfriend Armando Marquez 30. Police said he wounded her mother before being arrested. King died at Presbyterian Hospital after surgery.
President Carter plans to keep channels with Iran open and accept Ayatollah Khomeini’s offer to allow periodic health and safety checks on the U.S. hostages. A White House official said efforts will continue despite broken relations as clergymen in Tehran await word and tapes from captives.
Moscow reports Soyuz-35 lifts off carrying two cosmonauts one a current endurance record holder and a rookie. Tass says it will rendezvous with the Salyut-6 Progress-8 complex as experts anticipate a possible new endurance mark.
Helen Edwards of Macoupin County reports a tornado lifted her chicken house and threw it 50 feet. Some eggs were soft shelled or rubbery and others had humps from the shaking. About 20 chickens died and some survivors were maimed or missing tailfeathers.
