Roswell Jackrabbit Auction Prank Raises Funds for Fire Victims
Two Roswell Livestock Auction Co employees captured a jackrabbit in the pens and staged its sale in the arena as a joke. The rabbit was sold and re sold thirty times with buyers donating proceeds to homeless residents of the Sacramento Mountains fire. Numerous local residents and out of town buyers, including Solt Artesia and Mayhill, paid from 10 to 30 dollars per bid. An area rancher quipped that no one wants to leave with a jackrabbit.

Lincoln Forest Fire Contained After Four Days
The Lincoln National Forest blaze in New Mexico was contained after burning 14 470 acres and destroying 22 buildings in Weed and Sacramento. Firefighting effort involved about 600 personnel forming 40 miles of double firelines near the northeast corner. four minor injuries were reported. Investigators traced the start to an unattended campfire on private land.

James Goodrum a Chaves County commissioner said he could not recall the commission reappointing Jean Boswell of Roswell to the Eastern New Mexico Medical Center Hospital Board of Directors but agreed to it. The commission also named Roswell Mayor Jerry N Smith to the Southern New Mexico Economic Development District Board of Directors. Smith replaces former mayor William F Brainerd on the board.
