Chiang Kai-shek, last of the Big Four Allied leaders, dies in Taipei after a heart attack at 10:20 p.m. He named in his will a goal to recover the mainland from the Communists and to sustain nationalism democracy and social wellbeing.
State Rep. Clayton Stallings has been released from his contract at Eastern New Mexico University Roswell retroactive to Jan 21 due to a New Mexico law barring pay for higher education employees serving in the legislature. The action, described as mutual, ends six months of controversy after Stallings’ election win and involves DEAN John Gillis and the local Community College District board. Stallings plans pecan-farming until he finds new work.
Portales High School student Mark Sublette, 16, won senior division top honors for a minnows feeding habits project and will represent the region at the International Science Fair in Oklahoma City May 11 17. Clovis High senior Lynne Fisher ranked second for microbial tire degradation and will also attend the international event. Alt winners include Letitia Root and W Allen Wright. About 203 students exhibited 158 projects as the Roswell Kiwanis Club and NM Institute hosted the event at New Mexico Military Institute with Roswell Daily Record affiliation.
Lt. Gov. Robert Ferguson says he will concentrate on economic development in coming months and meet with the business community as his schedule allows. He denied reports that he was unhappy about his role.
Portales High School's six man chess team topped the State Chess Tournament held Saturday at New Mexico Military Institute. Sandia High School Albuquerque finished second Pojoaque High School finished third and Mayfield High School Las Cruces was fourth in the three round robin events.
