A farmer using a four wheel drive jeep freed a cow trapped chest deep in mud on the Bert Pfingsten farm between Hondo and Lincoln along the Rio Bonito after a week of danger. Tom Mann of Roswell assisted, replacing horse teams with vehicle ingenuity.
Gov. David Cargo signed 23 bills today, bringing his total to 303 signed, eight vetoes, and two partial vetoes. He vetoed a bond recording bill and signed the general appropriation and a conflict of interest measure.
Detroit AP reports results from a teen fair poll where 9 001 teenagers split roughly evenly by sex. Among questions, a strong gender gap appears on miniskirt approval with 3 482 boys yes to 410 no and 3 282 girls yes to 1 295 no.
Firemen battled an attic blaze at the La Cima Motel on North Main Street for nearly an hour. A three room wing suffered heavy damage with roof and attic destroyed, furnishings moved out to prevent spread. Allen Witherspoon 40 of Calgary Alberta Canada became ill on a Trans Texas flight from Dallas to Albuquerque. He was treated and released at Eastern New Mexico Medical Center after being removed from the plane at the Roswell municipal airport by Ballard ambulance attendants and TTA personnel. Hospital spokesman said it was nothing serious.

A pre dawn fire swept a Cornell University residence hall killing eight students and a faculty adviser. Eleven others, including eight female students, were treated for smoke inhalation. The two story building housed 71 people and the cause remained undetermined as investigators worked. President James E. Perkins canceled commitments and rushed home from Paris after learning of the tragedy.
U S District Judge George L Hart Jr will decide by Friday if the courts can order Congress to seat Adam Clayton Powell. In a preliminary hearing Hart questioned jurisdiction over legislative actions as Powell seeks to regain his Harlem seat from New York. The decision comes four days before a special election to fill the vacancy.
