A naval airship named Akron was destroyed at sea with 73 men reported missing. The incident, described on page four, involves the loss of a giant airship and ongoing search efforts.
A letter to The Record says a meeting will be held in the district court room at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon. O P Bartlett president of the New Mexico Farm Holiday Association will explain how farms and homes are to be financed under the farm holiday scheme. Public welcome.
The Record notes growing opposition to the city entering the electric power and light business. It reports organized efforts to block the proposed plant, led by prominent businessmen and major taxpayers. An interviewed opponent stresses strong resolve against the project.
Lieutenant Commander Herbert V. Wiley reports the airship Akron suddenly keeled, descended, and was demolished on impact in the water near the Jersey shore after a night storm. He describes seeing men swimming in a flash of lightning as wreckage drifted away and discipline controls remained intact.
The U S S Akron, largest airship, was struck by lightning and sank near Barnegat Light with 76 aboard, leaving 73 missing and 3 rescued. Admiral Moffett and other officials were among the unaccounted as rescue efforts continued along the New Jersey coast.
Second naval airship crash today off Beach Haven New Jersey as the J-3 from Lakehurst went down about 1:45 p.m. Eleven crew were aboard the airship with two believed alive. Rescue efforts included coast guard boats planes and ambulances as authorities awaited word on survivors and the fate of the rest.
Captain Daladorf of the craft Sea Phoebus recounted rescuing three Akron crew members during the disaster off Barnegat Light amid a thunderstorm. Navy officials announced the national tragedy, with President Roosevelt mourning the loss and ministers of inquiry vowing to probe accident causes.
Dr William E Goodsell died suddenly at 4 45 this morning at 102 North Pennsylvania Roswell from a heart attack. He had spent yesterday in good health with friends of his daughter. He was 69, born in Medina New York, came to Roswell in 1910 and had since given unselfish medical care to the poor. He taught the Westminster Bible class and was a devout church worker. He leaves two sons Ernest in Des Moines and Charles in Kalamazoo and a daughter Mrs Crosby Eaton Redman. wife died last January. Funeral plans not yet set, service to be arranged after sons arrive. In Deming New Mexico four people from the Padilla family died as a rabies outbreak linked to coyotes spreads through Dona Ana and the southern region. The victims are Bonafacio Padilla Bertha Padilla Donaciano Padilla and Mariama Padilla. Health officer Dr George Colvard ordered a dog roundup and quarantine after determining the infection source could not be traced.
The cemetery board will meet Wednesday afternoon April 5 at the Chamber of Commerce. Members listed include Mrs. Robert R. Brown chairman, Mrs. Mae K Wyliis secretary treasurer, Lea Rowand, Harry Jaffa, Willis Ford.
Albuquerque April 41 AP Dr O M Blakeslee superintendent of the State Training School for Mental Defectives at Los Lunas and seven other employees were discharged by the board of regents effective May 1 The superintendent likely will be the sole permanent casualty while others may seek reappointment George Whitfield Stephens of the Arizona State Hospital is cited as a possible successor The board said Blakeslee had made too many enemies and offered no complaint about his record
Senator Bronson M Cutting reiterated his refusal to engage in Democratic patronage in Washington or New Mexico. The remark followed W J Barker's claim that New Mexico patronage would be steered by Senators Bratton and Cutting. Barker seeks the U S district attorney post in New Mexico, opposed by Carl Hatch with Bratton and Rep Dennis Chavez backing Hatch. Governor Seligman supports Barker.
Farmington New Mexico April 4 AP excitement rises as prospectors hunt gold ore in the San Juans. Reports of high assays from Katz Canyon claims by Joe Steele and Henry Krueger draw attention, while R M Wheeler surveys the area for Gold King Mine. Geologists note the San Juan basin sits on sedimentary deposits eroded from La Plata range, creating a broad mineral potential.
Santa Fe April 4 AP Major F R Lafferty says provisions of the army appropriations act will force guardsmen receiving pensions disability allowances compensation or retirement pay to drop out of the guard or surrender those emoluments.
