Private Guard Services See Rapid Growth Across Nation

Private security firms expand due to unrest and vandalism along with business growth. Pinkerton's, Inc. reports a 20 to 25 percent staff rise over five years to about 27,000, with more than 20,000 on guard duty. Guards patrol lobbies, verify visitors, and monitor CCTV for corporations and housing projects. many are former police. About 2,700 work in detective roles.

SEC APPROVES 90-DAY TRIAL FOR HIGHER BROKERAGE FEES

The SEC approves a 90 day trial allowing NYSE brokers to add a surcharge of 15 or 50 percent on commissions for orders of 1000 shares or less. The move aims to aid liquidity while preserving small investors access to equity markets. The SEC will decide by period end if longer term changes are needed.
