The Vatican ambassador to Guatemala says he will mediate to secure the release of 17 guerrillas in exchange for West German envoy Count Karl von Sprell, after meeting with Guatemala’s Foreign Minister Alberto Fuentes Mohr. The move follows a reported message from kidnappers.
A gasoline and oil fire on U S 85 near Las Vegas New Mexico destroyed two service stations and multiple homes in a square block area. Fire officials evacuated 189 children and residents, with the National Guard assisting. Flames reached 200 to 300 feet, a thick smoke cloud obscured the sun, and power was cut citywide as crews battled fires at a Gulf station and the nearby roundhouse.
A jury trial in fifth district court opened for Virginia L. Dye age 20 of 1504 Highland Road with Judge Kermit Nash presiding. Dye faces one count of unlawful sale or possession of hashish linked to January narcotics arrests. Officer Russell D. Roswell judge George L Reese Jr dismissed a 5th District Court jury after expressing disbelief at the not guilty verdict in the Ricky Lee Cleland case. Cleland was acquitted of taking a car without consent though he admitted taking it. jurors debated for three ballots before reaching unanimous innocence. Cleland remains jailed on escape charges with sheriff custody.
Dor rance D. Roderick Jr. El Paso Times vice president and general manager dies at 45 after a heart seizure. He led Times Enterprises and the Roderick Foundation and owned the El Paso Livestock Auction. Survived by his widow and six children, plus parents and a sister.
