High School April Fool Picnic Upsets Teachers

High School seniors skipped classes yesterday and led a campus-wide April Fool prank by gathering for an all day picnic at the Berrendo. Other students joined, securing a hay ride and planning a countryside picnic dinner, while the event disrupted normal activities.

Fire destroys Casey building in El Paso blaze

A Wednesday night fire at 10 o clock leveled the Casey building at the Missouri and St. Vrain corner in El Paso. The Craig saloon and restaurant and Daniel Payne's grocery suffered the loss. Building damage is estimated at 35,000 with Craig's stock at 1,500 and Payne's at 2,000. A high wind intensified the blaze as six firefighters were injured when a porch collapsed from the second story, yet firefighting continued.

Old Timer Meets Horrible Death at Santa Rita

John Shannon a 49 year old Grant County resident and former Buffalo Bill's performer died at Santa Rita when he was crushed between a flywheel and belt in the concentrator engine room. He was known as the first white child born in close one and had earned fame as a bronco buster and horseman. Shannon, while adjusting machinery, lost balance and was pulled into the 16 inch belt, his body subsequently mangled.
