Johnson to Convene Top Conference on Viet Nam Policy

President Johnson will host a high level policy conference to review Ambassador Taylor’s recommendations for strengthening U S efforts in Viet Nam. Taylor warned no clear path to talks yet as Hanoi shows no sign of negotiating. Chou Enlai pressed for U S withdrawal while Italy urged negotiated settlement amid nonaligned appeal drafted in Belgrade.

West of Saigon Planes Downed In Ongoing Fighting

In Vietnam 20 miles west of Saigon an American helicopter was downed by Communist fire wounding a crewman. A second helicopter unloaded rangers but its door gunner was hit. both aircraft returned to base. The incident adds to mounting American casualties as nine South Vietnamese troops died with 20 missing and Viet Cong losses estimated over 50. Police said a Viet Cong bomber was arrested at the embassy blast scene and a second bomber killed. Memorials were held for an American secretary and a Navy enlisted man killed in the bombing.

Bliss Takes Command as RNC Chief Seeks Broad Appeal

Ohio's Ray Bliss assumed leadership of the Republican National Committee and urged a nationwide drive to build a party with broad appeal to all citizens. Helena Rubinstein, 94, a cosmetics executive, died. She had worked at her Fifth Avenue office Monday before illness. Pilots Strike Cripples Pan American Flights

A nationwide strike by the AFL-CIO Air Line Pilots Association halted Pan American Airways operations. Pan Am, the largest international carrier, shut down Wednesday night grounding thousands of travelers. Some travelers were rebooked on other overseas carriers while government chartered flights to Viet Nam and Germany continued.

Pair Held For Fatal Stabbing in Roswell

Roswell police hold two men in connection with the fatal stabbing of Jose Carrillo aged 27 at a party on Tuesday night.
