A heated poem laments the Ridings and Manitoba parklands after a long dry summer. It depicts blue smoke from wind whipped flames burning spruce and poplar, destroying a century of growth and silencing wildlife. The author credits firefighters for preventing greater losses.
Mayor J. G. Stitt represented the Village Council at the Manitoba Urban Assembly convention held in Portage la Prairie this week.
At the September Rossburn Hospital Aid meeting Mrs. Eileen Stitt received a Life Membership Pin for service. The group of 16 members and 1 guest met at Mrs. Helen Aylwin’s home. Linens for the nurses residence will be bought this month. tea and shower set for October 21 in the town hall. Mrs. Jean Lawless was nominated delegate to the Manitoba Hospital Conference at the Royal Alexandra Hotel October 3 to 5. Next meeting at Mrs. Netta Smith’s home. hostesses were Mrs. G Stewart, Mrs. J Lawless and Mrs. P Gunn.
Donors to Mr. and Mrs. Joe Maydaniuk of Mears district who lost their home and possessions by fire last week include Nick Chopp $2.00 John Maydaniuk $25.00 W Perchaluk $2.00 Harry Werbowski $2.00 and many others totaling $166.00. Donations come from individuals stores and unions such as McLeod's Store Bid ochka's Grocery Mike Sotas Rossburn Farmers Union Local 51 and Rossburn Dairy and Poultry Board.
L. B. Pearson leader of the Liberal Party of Canada will address the Marquette Liberal Association Nominating Convention at Minnedosa Legion Hall at 8:00 p m on Monday October 16. The public may attend though only delegates vote on the Liberal candidate. Potential nominees include Lem Shuttleworth and Harris Huston both prominent farmers and local organizers.
George Heisid le ds dug a garden potato weighing 2 pounds 12 ounces and appears likely to set the 1961 record while John Swereda reports a 2 pound 7 ounce rival find. On John Swereda Sr. farm Indians gathering roots unearthed pemican of former years after warming it confirmed the discovery.
Mr. E Kilimnik Elphin stone Pensions Representative for the Pelly Trail Division Association will attend a pensions seminar sponsored by The Manitoba Teachers' Society on Saturday September 30. The workshop at McMaster House Winnipeg studies a report on teachers pensions presented to the Minister of Education in November 1960. The report introduces a new Manitoba teachers pension scheme similar to the Civil Service plan. The seminar is chaired by Gordon G Newton St. Vital, chairman of the Provincial Pensions Committee.

Danylo Macahon aged 80 died September 10 at Shoal Lake Hospital. Born in Horoskin Austria he came to Canada in 1904. He married Sophia Chwaluk and lived in Seech district then near Menzie Manitoba. Funeral at Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church Menzie with Rev Olych officiating. burial at local cemetery. Survived by widow Sophia three sons Mike Kelloe Steve and Alex Chicago one daughter Anne Sitko four grandchildren and one great grandchild. Raginski Funeral Home Oakburn handled arrangements.
Garry Chuba aged five days died at Hamiota Hospital on September 2. He was the infant son of Walter and Frances Chuba of Leech. Burial occurred September 5 with a funeral service by Rev. Bagsik of Elphinstone and interment at the Roman Catholic cemetery in Elphinstone.
John Malar died at Erickson Hospital on Friday September 15 at age 71. Born in the Ukraine he immigrated to Canada in 1906 and settled in Fort William and Elphinstone. Survived by wife Mary three sons Joseph Mike and Andrew and three grandchildren. Funeral held at Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church Elphinstone on September 18 with burial in the church cemetery.

A banded pigeon marked No. 16 was killed at the H. Yaskin farm during a culling of pigeons. The origin of the bird remains unknown.
A Ruthenia Hall dance is planned for Friday September 29 with Bluebird Jamboree music. A 4H Sewing Club reorganizational meeting is Monday October 2 at 7 30 pm in the school for girls 10 21 mothers and leaders. A bingo fundraiser is October 4 at 8 pm in the Parish Halls with blackout 10 admission 75 extra cards 25 sponsored by the Ukrainian Catholic Women's League. Canadian Legion Rossburn Branch No 40 meets October 3 at 8 pm in the Legion Hall for important business.
A lecture and short film about the work of the Childrens Aid Society will be presented by Fred Greaves director of community Education on October 3 at 8 p m in the United Church Annex under the Rossburn Women's Institute. Lunch will be served and the public is invited to learn about helping children in need. Members’ regular meeting runs 7:30 to 8:00 p m.
The Ukrainian Ladies Aid of the Orthodox Church sponsors a fowl supper on Tuesday October 10 in the Rossburn Town Hall basement starting at 6 p m. Everyone is welcome.
