Manitoba Stimulus Push Aims to Drive Growth Amid Recession
Manitoba Finance Minister Vic Schroeder outlined provincial economic stimulus measures at a Manitoba Community Newspaper Association luncheon. He cited $700 million in capital investments, the Homes in Manitoba program, tax relief steps, and job-creating projects to counter national recession. He warned against indiscriminate deficits but defended using them to maintain public services. The plan includes tax cuts for small business, higher exemptions, and new charges on top earners, banks, and nonessential items. Schroeder noted federal transfers will shrink, boosting demand for care, education, training, and employment programs. He highlighted youth internships, pensioner tax relief, health care construction, and a higher minimum wage as levers to sustain growth near or above the national rate.
