An Oakburn east grain field circle and a Rossburn area light show puzzle observers. Manitoba UFO group members collected soil and grain samples while noting no heat on crops. A Strathclair farmyard light report adds to the mystery with no clear explanation forthcoming.
A Winnipeg reader reports oversized produce including a 28 lb pumpkin and 5 lb cauliflower from Mrs Fiel in Rossburn, 24 lb 2 oz cabbage from Mrs Barnesky, a 1 lb 7 oz cucumber in Mrs Smycniuk’s garden, and a 34 lb pumpkin plus other feats noted by Joe Oryniak and others.
Further donations have been received for the Recreation Commission fund to buy a tractor mounted scraper and flooding machine for the Rossburn Arena. Donors include local residents and organizations contributing to the project.
Regular LGD of Park council session held September 7 1977 at 7 00 p m in Russell Manitoba with Reeve Nowalkowski presiding and six councillors present Motions included approving August 9 1977 minutes denying a tender for part of SE 410-30-28W approving Edgar Allan Kelly tender for NW 32-19-19W 559 00 plus title transfer costs shared 50 50 with Mr Kelly and the LGD Commissioned payments and accounts totaling 37 869 67 plus specific individual payments and per name enumerator and election officer reimbursements By Law 397 third reading and other routine resolutions including snow fence installation and attendance at MGEA convention next meeting set for October 1 1977 at 7 30 p m.
Rossburn Collegiate enrolment sits at 184 as of September 14. The staff includes Mrs. Rev. Brown teaching English and language arts, Walter Dueck in maths, Louis Kurchaba teaching Ukrainian geography biology and library supervision, Peter Cooper in physical education English and skills courses, Francois Prevost in business education, Gail Rogers in occupation skills and art, Jerry Samuels coordinating work experience, Kathy Shewchuk with a Grade XII class and volleyball help, W E Stefanuk as principal teaching economics and history, with offices staff M Ternovetsky and secretaries and custodians Sterling Veitch and others.
Two members Frances and Pat Antonin enjoyed a week at Camp Wannacumbac with hiking and camping as part of Rossburn 4 H Sewing Sisters. Pat joined the 4 H Exchange trip to British Columbia and made many friends. The Rossburn 4 H Club invites new members to register on Monday September 19 at 7 30 p m at the Rossburn Collegiate with mothers asked to attend.
The Birtle Russell Progressive Conservative Association held a nominating meeting on September 10 at the Buffalo Plains Inn Shoal Lake drawing a large crowd. Harry Graham stood unopposed seeking re election as the incumbent M L A for Birtle Russell with Sterling Lyon, PC leader and guest speaker, outlining campaign issues.
Honourable Leonard S. Evans and H. N. Dubowits met Rossburn Village Council on September 13 to review the 12 unit Elderly Persons Housing project. Land acquisition was delayed but now secured, with plans for a separate building joined by a corridor forming an L shape. Tenders to be called in weeks with construction hoped to start in late November for a winter project. Architects from Winnipeg offered local input.
Peter Merry, the New Democratic candidate for Birtle Russell, announced on Wednesday that Zane Wonitoway will serve as his campaign manager. Wonitoway, a Foxwarren Angusville resident, said the campaign is progressing well and encouraged inquiries to Peter Merry Campaign Headquarters Box 430 Shoal Lake Tel 759 2484.
Weather has been warmer than July with light frosts only. The highest reached 82 degrees and the lowest 32, with 135 frost-free days to date. Normal growing season spans about 95 continuous froster days when readings drop below 32 at four feet above ground.
