School division releases combined Grade 11 and 12 exam results from last June. Each student line shows paper counts and final outcomes with supers indicating passes and failures. Release sourced from Pelly Trail School Division for publication.
Miss Roxie Hryt sak journeys to Winnipeg while weekend guests call at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Penuta and Mr. Joe Michalyshyn of Brandon. A Bran don visitor also stayed with Fred Michalyshyn.
The seventh annual United Nations Seminar for Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario high school students ran July 7 to July 11 at the Prince Edward Hotel Brandon. Main lecturer Brian Meredith outlined UN aims for improving living standards and human rights while stressing international thinking. Professor W J Waines discussed UN aid and technical assistance, and F W Hamilton spoke on UN food work with Manitoba Pool Elevators.
The Rossburn municipality held its regular meeting September 8 with Reeve Shust presiding and all councilors present. Minutes and the financial statement were approved. a 50-50 Indian Affairs participation request was discussed, along with a proposed coyotte control program for Riding Mountain National Park. The Valley School by-law received first reading, a Herd By-Law expanded, and CKOS-TV Yorkton satellite station support was approved for Board of Broadcast Governors submission. Timber Project 121-32 was rejected due to road-flooding concerns. Nomination and Election by-law passed. reeve and ward 1 and 3 candidates up for election October 28. Council set October 13 and 27 as meeting dates including a Court of Revision.
The Birdtail W I met at Mrs Bert Frieze's home with seven members. A jackpot ticket drawn by Mrs A Cleland was won by Mrs C Brown. Elaine Cleland visiting Winnipeg General Hospital spent the long week end at home. Social notes: David Joiner, Mrs Georgina Plant, Louis Kolesky with family, and Mr Ed Harris visiting the Frank Butler home.
A seminar concludes with an essay contest on whether the United Nations and its agencies are useful to Canada. Winners include Arlene Johnston of Port Arthur Collegiate in Port Arthur, Ontario, and Robert Pollock.
Oakburn residents will vote on September 14 on a 135000 by law for a new six room school and auditorium. Consolidation with rural districts and overcrowding drive the plan as central schooling gains support and tenders for construction are invited.
The Manitoba Federation of Agriculture summer camp on Clear Lake hosted seven week long sessions this season drawing over 400 youths from 100 communities. Camp leaders Bob Douglas and Miss Sally Block guided a program emphasizing group living outdoor recreation and leadership with Red Cross swimming awards and self managed youth canteen operations. The season ran June 26 to August 16 marking the 11th season at the federation’s permanent site.
After a luncheon the two travelers headed to Ottawa and then New York to witness the United Nations Assembly in session.
Thundershowers and rain plague harvest in Ressburn with 32 storms since July 1 and 16 rain days. Over 6 inches of rain fall, temperatures near normal with August highs around 76. Condition widespread across Manitoba delaying an early harvest as unharvested grain spoils every other day.
Archie Smith finished his last day as manager of the Manitoba Dairy and Poultry Co op egg grading station in Rossburn. He built up the business until a downturn in egg production with large scale producers flooding the market. Residents note paved streets completed by the Department of Public Works with only a seal coat left for next year.
Oakburn hosts its first fastball tournament this Sunday September 13 at the Oakburn Athletic Grounds one mile north of town. Nine entries from Canova Sask Lavinia All Stars Shoal Lake Emo and others already entered with more expected by Saturday night. Proceeds benefit the Oakburn Memorial Rinks building project with four ball diamonds and a refreshment booth on site.
